Marti was the great poet/patriot of Cuba and his poetry was truly superb. Unfortunately, many chauvinistic Cubans have attributed to Marti qualities that simply were not there. One of them is that this novel by him was a masterpiece which, in reality, was nothing of the sort. In fact, Marti himself admits to it being an inferior work on his part, written simply at the orders of his editor as a filler for the newspaper that he was working. It says much for the author that he admitted the deficiencies himself. As such, the work is mostly of historical worth rather than a literary one.
