As well as writing, he raises pigs and pedigree Dexter cattle.

I like this the best of the two Tom Holt Mapp & Lucia books. It is set in England during WWII and the eccentric villagers of Tilling, England, who are all middle aged or more, cope with war time privations. If you never read the original Mapp & Lucia books by E. F. Benson, these characters may not be as lovable to you as those of us who have reread the 6 novels by Benson over and over again. I am so glad Tom Holt did this. Another UK author has done the same, Fraser-Hampton. I think they have both done an excellent job.

Lucia and Elizabeth Mapp, two middle aged women who are now married and live in Tilling, are the matriarchs of the town. They are always at crossed swords and constantly plotting against one another. They are both married in the 1930s so their husbands become part of their plotting. Their husbands are weaker characters but much easier to know as people.

Lucia turns her husband, Georgie, into a gourmet cook for the officers and other members of government. Mapp turns her husband, Benj, into the head of the Home Guard. They each try to elevate themselves into positions as well. Mapp makes herself head of the village's Red Cross but there is no one to take care of in the Tilling Red Cross. So she walks around the village in her uniform instead.

Very few of us live like these people do nowadays. They have little entertainment other than one another so socialize with one another every single day. They can walk to everything. Playing cards with bridge is their main entertainment. Church is a necessary part of social and village life regardless of one's religious beliefs. They play the piano, or do watercolors, or garden or read. The newest thing they only sometimes do is listen to the radio.

I recommend you read the Benson novels first. I don't think this book can be enjoyed to the fullest without reading the ones which came before.

I really enjoyed this book and Tom Holt's other Lucia book, Lucia Triumphant. Really wish he'd write some more. It was such a surprise to discover these two additions to EF Benson's series. If you're a Lucia fan, don't miss these two.

It's always lovely to see more of Lucia, but my faith in this edition was shaken right off the bat when the name Mapp-Flint appeared as App-Flint THREE TIMES in the first two pages. The ghost of E.F. Benson must be livid. I hope these mistakes and others will be corrected in future printings.

Stick to the original Mapp and Lucia books by E.F. Benson. Even tho' you crave more stories of this delicious group of people, you will not get satisfaction from the Tom Holt books. He gave it a good try, but there is nothing to compare.
