Book Description

October 27, 2008

The first book devoted to this influential twentieth-century French couturier.

Lucien Lelong was a central figure in French fashion from the 1920s to the 1950s, and his designs were in many ways precursors of contemporary fashion shapes and developments. Noted for his skill, exquisite workmanship, and beautiful fabrics, Lelong and his house promoted a fluid, minimalist, elegant look. Lelong blended modern design with a strong business sense and was influential for both his fashions and his entrepreneurship. He was one of the earliest designers to diversify into lingerie, accessories, and perfumes, and in 1934 he introduced a luxury ready-to-wear line. During the Occupation in World War II, he was instrumental in persuading the Germans to allow French couture houses to remain in Paris rather than moving to Berlin.

This wonderfully illustrated history of Lelong and his house chronicles the period and its leading personalities, artists, and designers. Lelong's clients included Colette, Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, and Rose Kennedy; Balmain, Dior, and Givenchy apprenticed with him; and Horst, Beaton, Hoyningen Huene, Man Ray, and Lee Miller photographed his models. 134 photographs and illustrations, 48 in color

Amazing information about Lucien, who studied with him and under him, his enormous contribution to the haute couture world during WW2. I couldn't put the book down. If you like fashion, you have to get it! He is one of the founding fathers that inspires our newest designers, albeit unknowingly!

5.0 out of 5 stars The founding father of modern French couture, April 26, 2010
By
This review is from: Lucien Lelong (Hardcover)
Without Lucien Lelong, there probably wouldn't be a French couture industry today. It was thanks to his efforts that, during World War II, the French fashion designers and their ateliers, along with all their workers, were able to remain in Paris instead of being shipped to Germany, and that they were able to have the materials with which to continue working; and the great Christian Dior basically got his start working for Lelong. Mr. Lelong was a notable designer in his own right, and this book collects numerous examples of his best outfits from the 1920's through the 1940's, many of which adumbrate the New Look of the postwar era. Before Dior, Lelong was the dominant force in French fashion, and if you want to understand how haute couture developed, studying his career is indispensible. Strongest recommendation for couture history students.
