2.0 out of 5 stars Another Nora Roberts wanna-be
Perhaps I expected too much after reading the glowing reviews of this book. Perhaps I should give the book another try now that the dark, dreary days of winter have come to an end. Ultimately, though, I suspect I will remain puzzled over the kerfuffle surrounding the book.
I really looked forward to reading Lucifer Rising. I expected a fast-paced thriller with a...

'Lucifer Rising' has got it all: Characters with depth andedge; Plot with intriguing twists and turns; and Writing withbrilliant, real descriptions. Sharon Bower's greatest strength is her ability to weave a multi-layerered story around very real characters. Her prose is complex yet stark and often paints a picture full of rich details and interesting phrasing. She gives her characters very real and human qualities, whether that be the capacity to love or hate or both at the same time. These are not people who are simplistic or easily labeled as 'good' or 'bad'. What is intriguing about her two main characters is that they elicit the gamut of emotions from the reader: emphathy, frustration, admiration, confusion, happiness, sadness, and everything in between. Behind the backdrop of drug lords, violence, and journalistic opportunity, you find a developing relationship full of faltering trust, seductive desire, and ultimate discovery and redemption. It's a love story and so much more. I found myself amazingly engaged during this story and entirely interested in how it would turn out in the end. It's one of the better books I've read in a long time and I would definitely read whatever Ms. Bower's chose to write next. She's that good.

It reignited my passion for dark, sexy, espionage stories... the characters are delicious, the action is hot and heavy, and above all, the excellent writing allows effortless navigation through the intricate plot twists... do a friend a favour... give them a copy as a gift...

4.0 out of 5 stars I could not put this one down., February 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
I took this novel on a fishing vacation and had a difficult time putting it down so I could get on with my fishing. That's some stiff competition. Full of rich characterizations, suspense, sex and danger. The main character's dark and dangerous personallity is not played down here. Her volatility lends a nerve racking edge to the action while you are just waiting for the next shoe to drop. The sex is realistic, beautifull and passionate. And there's plenty of it. These are not just your obligatory bedroom scenes that appear in so many other lesbian novels. I found the two main characters believable and I cared about what happened to them. A good read and worthy of your dollars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular edge-of-your-seat romance, July 13, 2000
This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
In her commercial debut Sharon Bowers brings us a RIVETING story set in the glamorous and often deadly underworld of Miami - a world in which wealth, and seductive pleasures exist side by side with violence and death. It is into this very world reporter Liz Gardener finds herself stepping into as she pursues a story that has obsessed her for years now - the sordid tale surrounding a dark, beautiful and deadly ex-DEA agent by the name of Jude Lucien who having gone over to the other side is now one of the most powerful and feared drug lords in the business. With very different agendas, these two women will find themselves drawn to one another - sensing something very real in the other - sensing perhaps that neither is quite what she seems... This story is a WILD ride that will simply take your breath away as lies are told and hearts broken in the desperate struggle of two souls to persevere - struggling valiantly against the inner darkness threatening to destroy their love and the human foes determined never to give it a chance. Sharon's two heroines are beautifully depicted with incredible depth, rich emotional histories and engaging personalities. This is a FASCINATING, solidly crafted tale with a very contemporary feel to it and a well-paced blend of action and drama. It receives my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-stop thrill ride..., September 20, 2000
This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
Jude Lucien, former DEA agent turned drug dealer, lives and breathes in the darkest corners of the Miami underworld. Enter Elizabeth Gardener, a rookie crime reporter for The Miami Herald, who has developed an unwavering fascination/obsession with the former agent. Upon meeting one another, everything quickly spirals out of control for them both. To say that this novel is thrilling from beginning to end is a vast understatement. Once the book is opened and the first pages turned, the reader is left quite literally hanging on every word. The scenes depicted in this novel come alive with writing that is liberally laced with innuendo, verbal sparring and wonderful characterization. The reader cannot help but empathize with the two main characters as they struggle to deal with the feelings they have for one another and what that means for them both. The only drawbacks to this incredible novel are the persistent references of "dark" and "honey-haired" that Sharon Bowers has chosen to use in referring to the main characters. After the second reference, it went from dull to aggravating and this reader in particular was left gritting her teeth. That said, this novel is a non-stop action thrill ride from beginning to end. Be warned: there are scenes of graphic sex and violence which some readers may find uncomfortable. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself reading Lucifer Rising again well after you've finished it the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow., April 26, 2002

This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
There are plenty of reviews here that delve into the plot. So I'll save you a little time by saying that this novel, simply put, is one of the best in the lesbian fiction genre. While not perfect (too many references to the 'honey blonde' are a bad idea) it's a page turner. I've recommended this book frequently and never had the reader tell me afterward they were disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars talent rising, October 23, 2000

This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
This is the first time I have actually felt compelled to reccomend a book without reservation, but Lucifer Rising thoroughly deserves it.Fans of her on line fiction will absoloutely love it and it is a perfect entrance book into her writing. The charachters are presented to the reader slowly enough so as not to give away too much of the plot but not slow enough to discourage the reader. In fact after the first two chapters the book is unputdownable until the finish as the reader becomes caught up in the shadowy underworld of Miami and more importantly the human mind. This is not just a fast paced action packed story, but also a tender love story about forgiveness and redemption. So if you are an action fan , a hopeless romantic or an uber fiction fan then this is for you.I guarantee the charachters of Jude Lucien and Liz Gardener will stay with you for a very long time and leave you clamouring for more ....roll on the sequel Miss Bowers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, July 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
I finished it weeks ago and I'm still shaking! It's been a long time since two characters had such an effect on me. I fell in love with Jude and Elizabeth within the first few pages and they have yet to let go of my heart. So vivid it's as if I've watched the movie. I know what my friends are getting for Christmas this year.

Please Sharon, we need more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense, August 13, 2003
This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
While this book is typical of many "good girl falls for bad girl" story lines, it manages to keep you on the edge. Neither character is truly "good" or "bad," but as are all of us; each has some of both in them.

This book is much more intense than any of this genre I've read. The emotions are extremely strong and grab the reader. I have to confess that it was such an intense book I did one of the things I rarely do...part way through the book I had to flip to the back to check out the ending. (The suspense was killing me.)

If you like full characters combined with a strong, complex and intriguing story line you will enjoy this book. It also has a very sexy main character; one that is dark and intense while also hiding a heart waiting to be loved.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a sizzling, erotic thriller!, February 2, 2002
This review is from: Lucifer Rising (Paperback)
Jude Lucien is every girl's wet dream: tall, dark, and gorgeously attired in black leather. Oh, and just happens to be packing under all that leather -- a Sig Sauer automatic, to be exact. The brooding, troubled drug dealer has it all -- money, women at her beck and call, and a rising empire of illicit activity. But nothing could have prepared her for the entrance of Elizabeth Gardner, the honey-haired investigative reporter bent on discovering the true story about Jude's rise, and subsequent fall, from the DEA. When Elizabeth sets Jude up, she isn't prepared for a fall of her own -- right smack dab in love with the troubled drug lord and the violent world in which she lives. As their lives become more intertwined, Jude and Liz find that neither is what the other expects -- a revelation that could prove disasterous for them both.

Lucifer Rising is a must-read, erotic sizzler guaranteed to heat up the night! Don't miss it!
