Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Sandman spin-off comic book Lucifer rebounds from recent doldrums with three story arcs: a novella, a short story, and a novel. The novella, "Lilith," shows how that precursor of Eve is responsible for two fallen angels (one of whom becomes Lucifer, so this is an origins legend for him) and the remaining angels' abode after Lucifer's secession. The short story, "Neutral Ground," is a grimly amusing demon-possession romp: while a failed punk rocker's soul is occupied by a high-level demonic confab, a transvestite guard-demon absconds with his body--and conscience. The novel follows the vendetta of the great wolf Fenris of Norse mythology against the banquet guests who long ago betrayed him, and the fate of a young man who bludgeons wife and child to death; when these plotlines merge, all creation, even Lucifer's domain, is imperiled. While Lucifer regulars Gross and Kelly limn the big tale, P. Craig Russell fills "Lilith" with his classically perfect figures, and Ted Naifeh (see also How Loathsome, 2004) peoples "Neutral Ground" with spiky characters. Ray Olson

More About the Author

Mike Carey got into writing through comic books, where his horror/fantasy series Lucifer garnered numerous international awards and was nominated for five Eisners. From there he moved into novels and screenplays, while still maintaining a presence in the comics world (he is currently writing two of Marvel's flagship titles, X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four). His movie Frost Flowers, an erotic ghost story, is currently in production with Hadaly/Bluestar Pictures. He lives in London, England, about as far as you can get from the centre of the city and still have access to the London Underground train network. His wife, Linda, writes fantasy for young readers under the pseudonym A.J. Lake. They have three children and an implausibly beautiful cat.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding installment in an outstanding series., July 25, 2005

This installment of the Lucifer graphic novels has a little bit of everyhting. A flashback including the origins of Mazikeen, a dinner with Destiny, Ragnarok, a resolution of sorts between Michael and Lucifer and a cliffhanger. There is one nonessential side story that is still very well done. The writing is excellent although some of the art is inconsistent in quality. This series continues to amaze as it builds towards a conclusion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not consistent with rest of series, November 2, 2005

I'll have to agree Nicodeme. I have really enjoyed this series up until now, but this book fell flat. I felt that Carey wanted this to be a really emotional point in the storyline, but I just wasn't feeling it. The stories were not as engaging and the dialogue was dull. I've had so much fun with this series until now that I'll probably give the next book a try, just in case this one was a fluke.

4.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end., December 6, 2008

Mike Carey, Lucifer: The Wolf Beneath the Tree (Vertigo, 2005)

And so the Lucifer endgame begins. We veer back around to the Norse mythology which both Gaiman and Carey touched on at various times throughout Sandman and Lucifer, but it seems that Fenris, the great Norse wolf, will play a much larger role in the end of the world than we might have previously guessed. Up to the standards of the rest of the series, which is to say, it ain't Sandman, but it's the best of the spinoffs. ****
