Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Horrormeister Clark (London Under Midnight) outdoes himself in outrageousness in this suspense shocker about a ship under bloody siege by both psychopathic criminals and marauding mercenaries. On Christmas Eve, the Volsparr makes one of its regular voyages across the Baltic Sea, carrying passengers to loved ones in a Russian mining town as well as a tool crucial for maintaining a British mining corporation's lucrative contract there. Unknown to all but a few crew members, the ship is also transporting 10 homicidal maniacs imprisoned in its hold. When a team of hired paramilitary pirates storms the ship, the prisoners are accidentally released and the passengers and crew become collateral damage as the mercenaries and murderers fight for control of the ship. Though his tale has intriguing possibilities, Clark throws out one absurd plot twist after another to ramp up the thrills, and then plunges it into a bloodbath of torture and gratuitously brutal violence in the second half. Even the most strong-stomached fans of his supernatural horror novels may find this excursion into thriller territory too over-the-top for its own good.

From Booklist

Clark, author of several vampire-themed thrillers, shifts gears in his new novel. It’s set aboard a ship owned by a Russian mining company transporting miners’ wives to meet their offshore mates for the Christmas holidays. But unbeknownst to the passengers—in particular, Tanya Rhone, the novel’s central character—the ship is also transporting hardcore offenders who are being sent to a secret prison. Naturally mayhem ensures. Clark is extremely good at this kind of thing, plunking realistic characters into a surrealistic environment and seeing what happens. The novel is violent, but in a clever way that demonstrates the author’s respect for his readers. --David Pitt --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

More About the Author

Simon Clark is the author of the cult apocalyptic novel Blood Crazy: "everyone over the age of 19 has been driven murderously insane... children and teenagers flee for their lives..." His novels include Nailed By The Heart, Vampyrrhic, Whitby Vampyrrhic, Ghost Monster and a bloody fistful of others that earned accolades from magazines around the world. This from Hellnotes: 'Clark's is surely the most outrageous imagination to grace horror since the discovery of Clive Barker' And: 'I actually loved Blood Crazy. Not just liked it, but loved it.' 1.0 out of 5 stars Dumbest horror novel ever., October 8, 2010
This review is from: Lucifer's Ark (Hardcover)
I've never read anything else by this "author", but I can't imagine the rest of his "work" to be any better. What a moronic piece of crap! Every idiotic atrocity visited upon the cardboard cutout characters who populate this piece of hackery should happen to anyone who dares to scribble something this awful, and the same applies to the brainless zombies of Severn House, who foisted this thing onto an innocent book-buying public. "Literary work" of this caliber is an excellent argument for the benefits of illiteracy.
