Book Description

April 20, 1999
Part One Of Two Parts

Monumental devastation will sweep across the globe if the newly-discovered Hamner-Brown comet collides with the one major obstacle in its path: Earth. For millionaire Tim Hamner, the comet is a ticket to immortality. For filmmaker Harvey Randall, it's a shot to redeem a flagging career. And for astronauts John Baker and Rick Delanty, it's a second chance for glory in outer space. But for a world gripped by comet fever, fascination quickly turns to fear. And only those who survive the impact will know the even greater terror, when rich and poor, politicians and killers, turn to each other or against each other - and the remnants of humanity grow savage to battle for what little remains.

"A megaton of suspenseful excitement...which should keep readers going non-stop, cover to cover." (Library Journal)

5.0 out of 5 stars 20 years after publication and it's still intriguing, March 10, 2009

I really like a good doom story and Lucifer's Hammer is somewhat the landmark by which others are judged in my opinion. I enjoyed the character development which sets this book apart from so many in the genre. The writers were knowledgable on the subject and did their homework and while the disaster has some events that are a bit hard to believe, the characters are never hard to believe. They're interesting, entertaining and human. It's one of those books that you spend a long time reading due to it's length, but don't want it to end by the finish.

1.0 out of 5 stars The book is great, the reader is not, September 26, 2008
This review is from: Lucifer's Hammer Parts 1 of 2 (Audio Cassette)
This is a very good book, but the reader is a total waste. He sounds like a computer voice, with very very limited inflection. The voice characterizations are just plain bad. Read the book, but do NOT pay that kind of money for this recording. Sorry Connor, you are just no good.

4.0 out of 5 stars why so expensive?, April 30, 2007
This review is from: Lucifer's Hammer Parts 1 of 2 (Audio Cassette)
Remember Orson Welles famous rendition of War of the Worlds as a radio play? Well, you probably didn't hear it, but you have certainly heard of it. This suggests one way to treat the audio tapes of this Niven and Pournelle novel. As you listen to it, pretend that it is a fitting update to Welles. There are 8 tapes. Long because the book is long.

A faithful hewing to the written text. And to some of you, hearing it may be far more gripping than the silent word.

Sadly, at $64 list price, it's not cheap. The novel itself is only a few dollars new or second hand.
