Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-- After an unsuccessful attempt to capture the humor of a typical Lucy sight-gag in print, this concise biography begins. Krohn traces the entertainer's childhood in western New York, her theater and dance training, near-disastrous health crisis, and her move to Hollywood. The rest is television history in the making. The author recounts Ball's role as an innovator who set the groundwork not only for comedians, but for women in general by becoming the first female to own a television production company. The final chapters present her personal problems and professional life after I Love Lucy . Appropriate black-and-white photos pepper this readable and well-paced profile. --Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, RI

5.0 out of 5 stars This book describes all of Lucy's movies, life & shows!, February 24, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Lucille Ball: Pioneer of Comedy (Paperback)
I read this book in the Library, and it was wonderful! It told about all the shows she did, her movies, her husband, Desi, her children, Lucie and Desi Jr., and told about her life. It was a sensational book, and ment a lot to me. I love Lucille Ball! In Fact, If I could, I would make it be that ciggarettes weren't invented, because if they hadn't been, maybe she would still be alive!.
This book is the basic "learn all in a few minutes" book!
It's very short, and sweet!

1.0 out of 5 stars THE REAL LUCY: Her Life, Love, and Legacy, August 5, 2000
This review is from: Lucille Ball: Pioneer of Comedy (Paperback)
On screen, Lucy Ball was one of the funniest women America had ever seen--but off screen, life wasn't always a comedy. This biography is enough to tell you that, and tells about some perticularlly important I LOVE LUCY episodes. But the text is dry and not lively and detialed. While it is a nice book to read for beginning readers who love the Recardos, it is not detialed, and focuses more on Lucy's acting career than her personal life. If you want a good biography, try "Love Lucy", Lucy's autobiography. While it was written a few years before her death, it won't have close-to-end-of-life information, but it will be a whole lot more detialed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but Sweet!!, March 18, 2001

This review is from: Lucille Ball: Pioneer of Comedy (Paperback)
I joined the I Love Lucy Fan Club and this book was recommended. I liked how this book was short, and easy to read, but had a lot of good information about Lucys life. Her life wasn't always easy, but she made the best of it and really made a splash on television.I admire her a lot and I liked this book.
