Book Description

1877703214 978-1877703218 October 1991
Lucius Lyon came to Michigan in 1822 from his native Vermont and proved a useful citizen in many areas of early Michigan history. He surveyed much of the lower peninsula of Michigan, traveling by foot and horseback in the winter, when frozen water made the swamps easier to traverse. He served in the U.S. Congress as a delegate of Michgan Territory. He was an influential member of the Constitutional Convention of 1835 and went to Washington as a newly elected state senator to fight for recognition of Michigan's statehood, a process that would take nearly two years. As a land speculator he had a hand in the founding of many Michigan settlements including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Ypsilanti. As an innovative farmer he was the first to introduce the sugar beet to Michigan agriculture.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Lane has fully researched both published and manuscript sources. . . the book does show Lyon as she intended--an eminently useful citizen. . . The volume's numerous illustrations (including several portraits of Lyon) maps and facsimiles of leters and documents, are well chosen to enhance the text." -- Michigan History September/October 1992.

About the Author

Kit Lane, a Michigan native, has spent more than 30 years reseraching and writing Michigan history. Until 1988 she and her husband Art each ran a weekly newspaper in western Michigan; they are thought to have the only his-and-hers newspapers in the state. Other newspaper work includes stints on the Detroit Free Press, the Grand Rapids Press and the Southern Illinoisan. In addition to a series of small books on western Michigan history and the compendium-sized Western Allegan County History, she is the author of John Allen: Michigan's Pioneer Promoter.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting book about a man in Michigan's early history, November 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lucius Lyon: An Eminently Useful Citizen (Hardcover)
I found this book to be very interesting in its depiction of Michigan as a territory. The book describes Lucius Lyons efforts in surveying the land, acting as liaison between the local native americans and settlers, and serving as Michigan's representative to congress. Many other business and personal details of the man are found in this book. I recommend it to those wishing to learn more about the settlement of Michigan.
