4.0 out of 5 stars Luck of the Irish, May 28, 2006
This review is from: Luck of the Irish (Paperback)
Leprechauns are not jolly little bearded men sitting on toadstools; they are very normal seeming people with magic. Unfortunately, their righ, or king, is normal enough to get drunk and make foolish wagers with mortals. As a result, if his son, Brian, fails to find and retrieve the king's shillelagh, the leprechauns will lose their magic and be exiled from Earth. He has only a short time to recover the object, just until St. Patrick's day midnight. Following the song the relic makes, Brian tramps across America until he meets Maggie Donohoe Squires, a young mother trying to hold things together for her grandfather, her daughter, and herself running a diner. She somehow changes the song, so Brian knows that the key to his quest lies with her. Moreover, she truly needs his magic in her life, although his secrets make it hard for Maggie to trust him. Despite the fact that the magic is fading and the quest is of the utmost importance, Brian finds himself getting lost in Maggie's life. To resolve his mission, the leprechaun will have to make choices that hurt the people he has come to love, and the woman who holds his heart.

This is a charming novel that makes you wish it was longer. You can almost hear Celtic music playing in the background as the modern world and the ancient magic blend together. Whether or not you are Irish and whatever time of year it is, take time to enjoy the Luck of the Irish.
