5.0 out of 5 stars A zany, fun Loch Ness story offering quite a different premise., November 4, 2007
This review is from: Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating (Hardcover)
A.W. Flaherty's THE LUCK OF THE LOCH NESS MONSTER: A TALE OF PICKY EATING enjoys fine drawings by Scott Magoon as it tells of a little girl who tosses her oatmeal overboard all the time. She's a picky eater - but a small worm who swims alongside an ocean liner bound for Scotland finds much good about her throw-aways - too good, perhaps... it's a zany, fun Loch Ness story offering quite a different premise.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Hate Oatmeal!, January 14, 2008
This review is from: Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating (Hardcover)
This is a fun book to read to kids who are picky eaters. Since they have probably never tried oatmeal, this might entice them to take a taste, maybe (who knows; they might like it!). It also sheds some light for parents who get frustrated trying to get their kids to try new food.

I have had the book for a while, but my wife just read it to my boys for the first time last weekend. She loved it. Well, my boys already love it, and that is why they asked my wife to read it. The author and artist do a wonderful job at creating a history for the Lock Ness Monster.
Anyone with kids will love this book (and so will the kids).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tasty New Story of Legend, June 16, 2009
This review is from: Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating (Hardcover)
The Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating is by far one of the most interesting picture books I have read this year. This humorous, corky story involves a fascinating legend of how the Loch Ness Monster came to be and how a picky eater contributed to the growth of the "monster." Young Children will love the zany illustrations and descriptions of the monster's journey following a young girl on a ship who keeps throwing out her oatmeal to the sea in disgust. However, older children and adults will also be taken in by the connection of the science of picky eating, which is explained in more detail at the end. I may also be a picky eater and despise oatmeal, but I love this story for the unique combination of folktale, realism, and enjoyable illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Picky eaters and supertasters, November 13, 2007
This review is from: Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book. It balances themes familiar to childhood along with actual information on why there are such people as picky eaters in the world. Thank you again, Alice Flaherty.

It's too hard to find modern kids books which impart wisdom while still being genuinely funny and interesting for little ones. This is a rare gem which delivers. Our 4 year old boy loved it.

Illustrations are great. You'll find yourself loving a sea worm! Clever story on both the picking eating part and the origin of the Loch Ness Monster. I like at the end how she shows she didn't grow as tall as her family!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my 3 year-old's favorite books ever!, October 5, 2008
This review is from: Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating (Hardcover)
My little girl loves this book so much, she has asked me to read it over and over again. The book is beautifully written and illustrated. I am a professional writer and last summer interviewed one of my all-time favorite authors SARK for our local paper. SARK has written 15 books (and has over 2 million books in print) and she told me that she finds that a children's book is the hardest kind of book to write, because children see the truth in everything and are very discriminating. That said, Alice Flaherty captured the truth of a child's disgust for certain foods in such a humorous way and she ran with it...to make this a fascinating story for both young and old. I am going to buy this book as the holiday gift for all my friends with kids.
