From Booklist

It’s time for another crazy casino caper when Lucky O’Toole, the beleaguered customer services manager of the Babylon Casino Resort (Wanna Get Lucky?, 2010; So Damn Lucky, 2012), has to deal with yet another corpse. In a luxury car display room, a gorgeous blonde is found stretched across a candy-apple red Ferrari, the heel of a Jimmy Choo stiletto stuck firmly in her neck. But this isn’t just any blonde. She’s the ex-wife of Lucky’s former lover, Dane, who is now the main suspect in the killing. Other murders follow, all somehow linked to the Babylon. On the home front, Lucky’s mother, Mona, a former madame, and her father, “Big Boss,” who owns the casino, have finally tied the knot, and are expecting a new baby. With her hormones running wild, the unpredictable Mona becomes even more capricious. And as if that’s not enough pressure, Lucky’s love life is on hold until she chooses between hunky French chef Jean-Charles and sexy musician Teddie. With Lucky’s third adventure, the talented Coonts takes the reader on another wild ride through Sin City. --Shelley Mosley

“Wanna Get Lucky? sizzles.  It beguiles and surprises.  It’s belly-laugh out, Janet Evanovich.  The new hot number is Deborah Coonts!”--Gayle Lynds, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Spies

“Deb Coonts's debut novel is more fun than a winning streak in Vegas!...Readers will want to meet her again -- and soon.”--Diane Mott Davidson, New York Times bestselling author of Fatally Flaky

Lucky Bastard by Deborah Coonts
Wanted to read this book because of the locale: Las Vegas strip.
Lucky has a lot going on in her personal life (others in the family) and her business life-she runs a strip mall on the strip.
She is called when a dead body is found and wishes she had not answered the call.
Fascinating, love to learn about new things: red contact lenses! Love how they solve why things happened and the props used.
The book cover really fits the book content. Seems just when they get a handle on one aspect of the murder, there are 10 other questions and they
go clue to clue to find the answers. There are a lot of characters in the book but they do not swarm down all at once to overcome you. It's easy to keep them straight.
I loved hearing of the Spring Mountains as my visit to LV we walked around the area there.
This series sounds like it could go on forever because there are a lot of things that come up at casion/restuarant/hotels in LV.
I received this book from JKCommunications in exchange for my honest opinion.

I've only read one other of the Lucky series and thought that continuing on with it would be fun, but I found that to keep up with all the action in this particular story was more like work than pleasure. With the first book I read I had no problems distinguishing who was who and what was going on, but this time I just couldn't figure out all of the back-story. Don't get me wrong the author does a fine job doing her best to keep you up-to-date with what has happened in the past, it is just that this time there is too much happening to too many people to make it easy for the reader to keep up.

Multiple murders, a new relationship, a lack of sleep, a mother driving her crazy and various other things happening to Lucky just sometimes bogs the story down. The descriptions of the hotel, the gambling and the poker tournament give the reader a lot to digest. Then there is the ex-relationship that Lucky is trying to forget and the fact that a 'friend' of hers appears to have murdered his wife. A wife that nobody even knew he had. Several more murders happen and this is even before we are done with the first half of the book! Oh and did I mention that Lucky's Mother wants to open a phone sex hot-line with a woman who is well over ninety?

Too much going on in too short a span of time make this a difficult book to not only read, but to suspend my disbelief for.

Lucky O'Toole is back with another adventure at The Babylon on the Las Vegas Strip in book four of this fun-filled series.

Lucky has been promoted to Vice President of Customer Relations but that doesn't make her job any easier. She has barely settled into the position, her new office isn't even completed yet, when the next crisis strikes. A woman is found dead, sprawled across the hood of a new Ferrari in the Babylon's on-site dealership, a Jimmy Choo stiletto stuck in her neck. At The Babylon it is never just another boring day!

Lucky already has a full plate. Nursing a broken-heart along with constant reminders of her previous relationship, fending off the attentions of the new chef, dealing with her mother who wants to start a phone-sex business (mom previously ran a brothel) and her new job responsibilities were already keeping her busy. Plus the Smack-Down Poker Tournament is holding its final round at the Babylon and Lucky needs to maintain business as usual, never mind that more people are turning up dead and the body count is rising. Things are only going to get more hectic and soon Lucky begins to fear for her own safety. Lucky is running on no sleep but there won't be any time to catch up now.

Throughout the series Lucky has remained a fun and exciting character. Still totally in control in her professional life, her romantic life is in constant upheaval with her propensity to choose the wrong guys. While romance is still an underlying theme, this installment had a lot less swooning over her men than in previous books. I missed Teddi, Lucky's ex, but without him Lucky's strong, independent character was back on display.

`Lucky Bastard' is the first Lucky O'Toole book I've read. I didn't find it hard to get to know the characters as their personalities really shined. When a old friend of Lucky's calls her and brings her into a crime scene in her hotel, she's stepped into a chain of events she knew nothing about. To complicate matters, the woman is her friends' ex-wife. As the bodies start piling up, Lucky's love life gets more complicated, her mother is pregnant (and coming up with crazy schemes), and Lucky's barely hanging on. `Lucky Bastard' is a very busy story, with multiple plot lines which do finally coalesce at the end. At times, I found it hard to keep up with the pace (as did Lucky!), but I liked the setting and the characters a lot. I'm not sure if this is through the whole series, but Lucky does take on more of an investigative role when she's normally in the business of keeping guests happy. This puts herself and those she cares for in harm's way more often than not. Overall, `Lucky Bastard' is a quick and exciting beach read.

Lucky O'Toole series: Wanna Get Lucky? (1), Lucky Stiff (2), Lucky in Love (2.5), So Damn Lucky (3), Lucky Bang (3.5), Lucky Bastard (4)

More About the Author

My mother tells me I was born a long time ago, but I'm not so sure--my mother can't be trusted. I do know that I was raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food and beer. I currently live in Las Vegas where family and friends tell me I can't get into too much trouble. Silly people. I have owned my own business, been a tax lawyer and a flight instructor, and have survived a teenager. And now, I make stuff up for a living.

Each day I sit in the front window at my favorite Panera and play with my imaginary friends. My SO is a psychologist and he tells me that many of his colleagues would consider me an annuity. I can live with that. Thankfully, he can too.

I write a mystery series set in Las Vegas--funny, sexy and romantic. I've been told they are comedic thrillers--sounds like an oxymoron to me, but you get the drift. The first in the series, WANNA GET LUCKY?, came out May 2010. The second, LUCKY STIFF, will be available February 15th, 2011. With the third, SO DAMN LUCKY, to follow.
