5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky Day

On his new album, Lucky Day, Shaggy expands his already unique pop reggae vision with fourteen original songs, Lucky Day is an blend of whine-and-grind dancehall ("Full Control" featuring Barrington Levy), sultry R&B hip-hop ("Get My Party On" featuring Chaka Khan), blue-lights-in-the-basement lovers rock ("Strength of a Woman") and conscious reggae funk ("Give...

I remember watching a commercial a few months ago that spotlighted an album of current R&B "hits", and at one point they mentioned Shaggy. And I said, "Shaggy has a song out?" After the success of "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel" back in '01, Shaggy kind of disappeared...or so I thought. 5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky Day, October 31, 2002

This review is from: Lucky Day (Audio CD)

On his new album, Lucky Day, Shaggy expands his already unique pop reggae vision with fourteen original songs, Lucky Day is an blend of whine-and-grind dancehall ("Full Control" featuring Barrington Levy), sultry R&B hip-hop ("Get My Party On" featuring Chaka Khan), blue-lights-in-the-basement lovers rock ("Strength of a Woman") and conscious reggae funk ("Give Thanks").

While the above songs are guaranteed to keep his legion of fans well satisfied, it's the "experimental" tracks like the humorous "Hey Sexy Lady," laced with mariachi trumpet, flamenco guitar, and castanets ("You put it on me ceiling to floor/ Only you can make me holla out for more"), and the bubbly old school reggae-country hybrid "We Are the One" that elevate Lucky Day to higher ground.

But after hearing this album, I'm starting to think that maybe disappearing would have been a better move.

The problem with this album, besides the fact that Shaggy went back to announcing his name at the beginning of every track, is that it really has nothing to offer. This is evidenced best by a bad choice for the leadoff single, "Hey Sexy Lady". But the rest of the songs aren't that great either. "Shake Shake Shake" is really lazy, "Leave Me Alone" is atrocious, and "Get My Party On" (featuring Chaka Khan) isn't much more than embarrassing (that song isn't even that fast, so how could you party to it anyway?). Even Barrington Levy fails to impress on "Full Control".

The rest of the songs on here are just weird. "We Are The Ones" and "Lost" make no sense. And the album ends with a hidden bonus track, which is an obligatory song featuring Sean Paul, a 1990-flavored remix of "Hey Sexy Lady". And that song also does nothing to help matters. The only way you'll really have a Lucky Day is if you don't hear this album.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...Disappointed!, November 22, 2002
This review is from: Lucky Day (Audio CD)
I am a huge Shaggy fan and couldn't believe how much I loved the "Hotshot" album on which EVERY single song was great which I think is extremely unusual. I was psyched to hear his new stuff but it just doesn't cut it. It's pretty monotonous and not real danceable...just nothing hooked me. I will continue to keep an ear out for more from him but this one? Nah.

4.0 out of 5 stars A PRETTY LUCKY DAY INDEED!, November 1, 2002

Well, for all of you who enjoyed Shaggy's last album, HOTSHOT, you will surely enjoy this one. It is very similar in theme and more cohesive than HOTSHOT. He has many fun dance reggae tracks on SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE, FULL CONTROL, HEY SEXY LADY, GET MY PARTY ON (WITH THE AWESOME CHAKA KHAN), LUCKY DAY....then the second half of the cd switches to more songs with great beats but more thought provoking lyrics....this is a very enjoyable listen! The only complaint is that many of the songs sound the same....I would like more diversity next time out! But, that aside, a fun listen! Also, there is an unlisted 15th track which is a remix of STRENGTH OF A WOMAN!

(Cue background beats) Wah, wah, wah...

It's been too long since hearing NEW (not remixed, etc.) Shaggy and he's back and better than ever! Strength of a Woman has to be one of the best songs of the year - just a great/happy/fun CD - a relief from all the Vines/Hives/Strokes hype that's out there now - get the CD, your favorite drinks and enjoy - I know we did! Thanks, Shaggy - it's great to have you back!

I was at a Shaggy concert in August 2002 before this new CD came out and he previewed a couple of his songs and they were SO AWESOME and I loved them so much, the whole concert was the best I had ever been to! When this new CD came out I couldn't wait to get it! I got to meet Shaggy, Rayvon, Rikrok, Brian and Tony, the rest of the band and the dancers at the concert and backstage, they are the most down to earth people you will ever meet! The CD ROCKS, congrats to MY BOYS, can't wait to see you guys again! Love the songs STRENGTH OF A WOMAN AND WALKING IN MY SHOES!

3.0 out of 5 stars Different than Hotshot, Ok in its own right, November 2, 2002
By
This review is from: Lucky Day (Audio CD)
If you're looking for the energy that was found in Hotshot, Lucky Day is not the answer. Shaggy has gone for a slower, mellower approach that may not appeal to all listeners.

Each track sounds very similar, and none of the 15 tracks will get anyone out on the dance floor.

"Hey Sexy lady" is the best song on the album, and there are 2 versions (Song #15-hidden). This song will appeal to the TRL crowd, but won't get the worldwide recognition like "Angel" or "Wasn't Me"

It seems like one of those B-side albums thrown out there, riding on the heals of a previous hit, just to make a few bucks.

When not comparing the album to Hotshot, it is OK in its own right. I can see grooving to some of the tunes with my sexy lady, although I don't expect the room to be rockin'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Great Songs, Some Misfires, October 29, 2002
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lucky Day (Audio CD)
After hitting the reggae-pop jackpot with "Hotshot" last year, Shaggy does little to tinker with the formula for success he has tapped into. Some solid reggae-fused beats, some boasting, some toasting, and a lot of love for the ladies, and you have described "Hotshot" - or "Lucky Day".
That's not to say there aren't some very good songs on this disc. "Hey Sexy Lady" with a great dance beat, and excellent use of horns is a real stepper. "Hookie Jookie" will leave you laughing with its clever lyrics. And, in an unexpected move which represents the only real growth on this album, Shaggy teams up with Chaka Khan for a funkfest called "Get My Party On", which is easily the best track on the disc. Their voices work wonderfully together, and this tune lets them rip.
Unfortunately, this disc grows weary after a few songs. There isn't much digression from a basic reggae beat, and Shaggy doesn't add that much by way of originality. It's a shame, because as his track record proves, Shaggy can put out some great singles, but has a hard time holding your interest for 15 songs. The couple of great tunes make this disc worth picking up, but I hope you have better luck getting through the entire disc than I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Its Weight In Gold! Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!, January 22, 2012
This review is from: Lucky Day (Audio CD)
I am a super Shaggy fan. I am, most often, not disappointed with his work.

This CD was released in 2002, but because it is so well done, it is dateless.

This is an excellent CD. It has dance, thought-provoking, romantic and just-chillin' tracks. If you are a Shaggy fan, you will like this one.

Some of the tracks would please almost anyone. Chaka Khan is the lead voice on one of the dance tracks and she gets the job done, well. Track eight (8) "Lost" featuring Prince Mydas is over-the-top good.

Adding this one to your music, CD collection will not be a mistake.
