The story of Owney is a fascinating true tale.,

This review is from: A Lucky Dog: Owney, U.S. Rail Mail Mascot (Hardcover)
Children should be fascianted by this story of a stray dog that eventually make his way around the world. Students have been inspired to learn geography by Owney's adventures. Classes across the country actually mail a symbolic stuffed Owney to other classes and follow Owney on his journey. All in all a delightful story.

This is a compelling true story about a small homeless dog who became the US rail mail mascot and a world traveller. Its style is concise and simple yet thorough enough to share the many lessons it has to offer us all. Owney is a triumphant uplifting tale told just the way a child wants to hear it. We read it often and give it as gifts as well. Hightly recommended by this mother of ywo young boys.

A book about a book???,

This review is from: A Lucky Dog: Owney, U.S. Rail Mail Mascot (Hardcover)
I bought this book thinking it was actually 'Owney, the Mail-Pouch Pooch', which we originally checked-out from the local library. Unfortunately, this book only features part of Owney's fascinating and almost unbelievable travels...and the pictures are only sketches of the original photographs that are in the other book. Over all, I was really disapointed in this re-telling about Owney. The details are just not there, especially after reading the other book. This edition might be good for little ones, like maybe three and up, who can't sit still through a more detailed version, but 'Owney, the Mail-Pouch Pooch' offers the listener a richer version of the story with REAL photographs of who is assumed to be Owney. This book, in my opinion, just doesn't cut-it. Consider the other book instead.

Delightful Read!,

A Lucky Dog by Dirk Wales is a delightful true story about Owney, the official U.S. Rail Mail mascot. From from 1888 - 1896, this lovable mutt visited not only American cities as he traveled by train across the country, but also Canada and overseas! The Albany, NY Post Office was his home.
Although a well-illustrated (by Diane Kenna) picture book, the story will appeal to all dog lovers. I found this book at the railroad museum in Glenwood Springs, Colorado while on my 2011 Book Tour. See photos from that visit at [...]

This is a fun book for kids, and since it's a true story it adds a little history as well. Very nice illustrations. I do wish, tho, that children's books were listed with a suggested age range. This book seems right for a 5 to 9 year old, and I was shopping for a book for an older child. I've played this guessing game with Amazon for other children's book purchases, so I hope somebody hears this! The Ownie book, tho, was so darned cute I'm keeping it for a different child who will be old enough for it soon. Hmmm...I wonder if Amazon gets me to buy more books this way...

I work for the Postal service but had never read the story of Owney the postal dog. Then when we sold the Owney stamps a customer ask if I had read the book,I said no.When I got home, I ordered the book and read it the day I received it. Now I can say yes,I have read Owney the Postal dog book. It was a great story. PJMeade
