Recording in Austin TX, Fiona was joined by a full band including special guests Marcia Ball, "Steady Rollin" Bob Margolin, and Kaz Kazanoff & the Texas Horns to record a tour-de-force of raw acoustic blues, swing, electric blues, rockabilly and every style of blues in between.
Lucky 13 also showcases Fionas proficiency as a songwriter she penned 10 of the 13 songs on the disc. Her understanding of American roots music and clever storytelling distinguishes her songs from records which merely cover blues standards. But this album is not a nostalgic walk through your parents music collection. Boyes contemporary sensibilities perfectly mix the soul of the blues in her songs to give this album a thoroughly fresh feel.

I heard Fiona Boyes on XM radio on the blues station and thought she sounded interesting. She is. She's got a growly voice that's just right for the blues and she plays with some of the best - Bob Margolin, Marcia Ball just off the top of my head. Worth the money, buy it and treat yourself.

I was fortunate enough to hear her album "Gimme Some Sweet Jelly Roll" and that turned me into a rabid fan. She's got the voice, and she can PLAY GUITAR, too!
I've only heard 2 tracks of this album so far (I'm using my pepsi points to get it) and I wish Amazon had more of her stuff. She is absolutely incredible!

Fiona Boyes' American debut follows eight Australian albums released since 1990. In this Yellow Dog label stateside debut, she howls and purrs convincingly. Her voice has a bit of a rasp that suits the intensity of music like on "High Cotton" where her electric lead scorches & her voice matches the intensity, "I'll be standing knee deep in high cotton one day." "Stranger in Your Eyes" smokes slowly where Fiona juices the blues from the guitar, "I thought the world of you, but I didn't know the man I trusted would ever stoop so low; I just couldn't believe the depth of your disguise." "Pigmeat Lover" has some great finger-picking and even a yodel as the double-entendre is hot & heavy, "She loves the way he greets her with the meat shaking on the bone, It might hurt your pride but you better go & run her home." Bob Margolin joins Fiona for a vocal duet Lillian McMurray's "Red Hot Kisses" that explodes with guitar pyrotechnics. "Homesick Blues" shuffles the set to a close. "Lucky 13" is a good set of power blues. Enjoy!
