Book Description

September 1, 2009

When hunky rancher "Lucky Beau" Luckadeau accuses spitfire Milli Torres of stealing his prize bull, she promptly shoots at him, triggering a feud that only gets resolved when they discover they share a steamy hot memory from a night long ago…

It was a night of passion that has always haunted Lucky. The mysterious beauty he seduced at a cousin's wedding disappeared. He's always been lucky at cards, lucky
with cattle, and lucky with land, but he's never been lucky in love.

Now Milli Torres has come to southern Oklahoma to help out on her grandfather's ranch. A cut fence and a big, mean Angus bull in the pasture are bad enough, but then she looks up and sees Beau Luckadeau. Great God Almighty, how did he get from Louisiana to Ardmore, Oklahoma, and what in the hell is she going to do if he recognizes her?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this first book of a new cowboy trilogy, prolific author Brown (To Trust) makes plenty of amateur mistakes. Milli Torres returns to her grandfather's Texas ranch only to find that the next door neighbor is the man who fathered her child during a one-night stand two years ago. Beau Lucky Luckadeau is too dense to connect the scrappy cowgirl to a woman he's convinced was only a drunken hallucination. When Beau finds out he's the father of Milli's daughter, the requisite romancing begins. Stock obstacles hinder the relationship, from Beau's gold-digging fiancée to Milli's overly dramatic five-hour flounce off before a country song convinces her to turn around, but the conventional outcome is never in doubt. Shifting points of view and flat characters make this a decidedly subpar addition to the genre. (Sept.)

2.0 out of 5 stars A big let down. The heroine is extremely selfish and a bit unstable. The hero is a push-over., September 14, 2009

I had a feeling the book was going to be bad when it opened with the heroine shooting at the dirt near the hero's feet. She was mad because he was offering to help get his prize bull off her family's property. This is a modern day story... not an old west story. People today don't just shoot at each other without facing consequences. Still, I decided to keep trying with the book. It only got worse.

The heroine is the mother of the hero's child, but she never tells him he is the dad. She "doesn't want to share" her daughter and "doesn't want her daughter to have a daddy." She wants to keep the child for herself... as if she has the right to make such a decision. That is basically her attitude through 3/4 of the story. She was more concerned with what she wanted than with her baby's right to know her daddy. More concerned with doing what she wanted than with the fact that he had the right to know and love his daughter. When it all comes out, he is angry but forgives her right away. She takes her daughter and runs off in the middle of the night with the intention of hiding from him forever... WHY? Not because she fears for their safety in any way, in fact he treated them both with total adoration. She runs off because an ex-boyfriend had cheated on her before and she doesn't want to risk that the hero might do the same. Total selfishness. I can't enjoy a story with such an unlikable heroine.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want to get me some more!, August 23, 2009
This review is from: Lucky in Love (Mass Market Paperback)
Anthony "Lucky" Luckadeau is a rancher. He owns the Bar M ranch. Some people would call him lucky. He wasn't born ranching but he has done well for himself so far. Though he may be lucky, he is not lucky when it comes to love. Beau thinks it is about time he settles down and starts a family. He plans to pop the question to Amanda, a schoolteacher that he has been dating for some time.

Jim Torres's ranch, The Lazy Z, neighbor's the Bar M. He had an accident and is recovering but needs help on the ranch for a little while. Millie Torres, Jim's granddaughter arrives with her daughter Katy. As soon as Millie realizes that Beau is right next door to her, she contemplates packing up her bags and heading back home. Beau may not have recognized Millie but she sure remembers him and the night they shared so long ago.

Millie and Beau is a match made in heaven. Millie is beautiful as well as hot tempered. She is like a firecracker. She definitely shows Beau who is in charge. Beau is exactly who I picture when I dream of cowboys. A man who knows how to wear a pair of jeans. From the moment that I sat down to read this book, I was laughing and knew that I was going to really enjoy this book. I wasn't wrong. I enjoyed this book so much that I plan to rope myself some more of Carolyn Brown and her books. Lucky in Love is a must read!

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, November 19, 2009

This review is from: Lucky in Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I found the writing to be stilted and disconnected for the first half of the book. Then it seemed another author took over the writing for awhile and then the bad writing was back again.

I seemed like Ms. Brown couldn't go 2 pages without putting in some phrase like 'belongs out here like a horse apple in a church social punch bowl' or 'didn't know straight up from backwards on a sunny day'. She also loves to use the word 'harelipped'. I don't understand why she made all the characters sound like some hick backwoods country people who lived 200 years ago.

This story just didn't flow. And don't get me started on the typos. This story also could have benefited with a few more section breaks. She would be talking about one character and what was going on in their mind and continue right on to another character with no break.

I had a terrible time trying to finish this book. I'm just glad I got it from my local library and didn't fork over $6.99 for it.

I love westerns (historical or modern), but I definitely would not recommend this book to anyone.
