Book Description

February 1988
When his best friend Keith moved away, there was a big hole left in Frank's life. Then a bad car crash put him in the hospital. While there recovering, he got a visit from the star of his high school basketball team, Purnell Johnson. It wasn't long before his luck started to improve:

Their eyes met. and for long seconds they were locked like that, then Purnell turned away. "I suppose I'd better go."

"Don't," Frank said, reaching out to put a hand on Purnell's arm.

"Lucky, what's happening here?"

"Come here." Frank pulled him closer, and suddenly they were face-to-face. Frank lifted his head and their lips touched. He slipped his arm around Purnell's neck and they kissed again, longer and stronger than before.

Then Purnell drew back. "Stop it," he said weakly. "Damn it, Lucky, who told you that you could come into my life and disturb everything like this?"

"Be quiet and kiss me again."

Frank embraced him, and once again they kissed. This time there was more fire, more strength in the kiss -- and Frank knew that Purnell would not leave.

From the Author

I wanted Lucky in Love to be the kind of high-school romance novel that gay teenagers have always wanted -- one where gay couples are as unremarkable as straight ones, and where a gay boy's feelings are presented as natural and wholesome. Whether you are a gay teen, gay adult, or sympathetic stright person, I hope you enjoy it!

About the Author

Don Sakers was launched the same month as Sputnik One. A Navy brat by birth, he spent his childhood in such far-off lands as Japan, Scotland, Hawaii, and California. In California, rather like a latter-day Mowgli, he was raised by dogs.

Don lives at Meerkat Meade in suburban Baltimore, with his companion of many years, costumer Thomas Atkinson.

More About the Author

Don Sakers was launched the same month as Sputnik One, so it was perhaps inevitable that he should become a science fiction writer. A Navy brat by birth, he spent his childhood in such far-off lands as Japan, Scotland, Hawaii, and California. In California, rather like a latter-day Mowgli, he was raised by dogs.

As a writer and editor, he has explored the thoughts of sapient trees (The Leaves of October, Baen 1988), brought ghosts to life (Carmen Miranda's Ghost is Haunting Space Station Three, Baen 1989), and beaten the "Cold Equations" scenario ("The Cold Solution," Analog 7/91, voted best short story of the year.)

In 2009, Don took up the position of book reviewer for Analog Science Fiction & Fact, where he writes the "Reference Library" column in every issue.

In his day job, Don works for the Anne Arundel County Public Library. His actual job title -- "Library Associate" -- makes it sound like he gives lots of money to the Library, but in fact it's the other way around.

Don lives at Meerkat Meade in suburban Baltimore with his spouse, costumer Thomas Atkinson.

This review is from: Lucky in Love (Paperback)
Don Saker's second book fills a void that has existed for a significant number of teens by restoring romantic feelings to fictional works for a critical time of their development. This teen romance also tackles the problem that develop when love encounters multiple identity issues. It also plants the roots of homophobia firmly at the feet of the feelings of insecurity that arise in some over adolescent sexuality. The simplicity of the prose and character development lets the

reader focus on the intricacies of interlocking relationships. Frank, introduced in " Act Well Your Part," falls in love with Purnell, the schools star basketball player. Between them they have to face a lot of ignorance: racial, cultural, and social. In the end, they discover that not even the innocent are spared the violence of prejudice.
