I fell in love with the town and people Jill Shalvis introduced in her first three Lucky Harbor books (Simply Irresistible, The Sweetest Thing, and Head Over Heels), so I had high expectations coming into Lucky in Love. Ms. Shalvis did not disappoint! Mallory is a bright, fun, hardworking, caring heroine I simply adored. Like all the Lucky Harbor heroines, Mallory is someone I'd love to be friends with, were she real. But despite how together Mallory appears to be on the outside, she carries internal scars from her past which broke my heart. Ty, in turn, is a former Navy SEAL medic who lost his team and still carries scars of his own from that. He doesn't want to get attached to anything or anyone, which is why he thinks getting involved with Mallory is a bad idea. What Ty can't see (at first) is that Mallory is perfect for him. The two of them have fantastic chemistry, which translates into sizzling heat and a heartwarming love story.

Lucky in Love is the fourth book in Ms.... Shalvis's Lucky Harbor series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Where the first three Lucky Harbor books revolved around three sisters and three best friends, Lucky in Love starts off a new trilogy within the series, this one about three chocoholics and the men who love (or will soon love) them. Fans of the first three Lucky Harbor books will be delighted to hear mention of the previous books' heroes and heroines, and Sawyer from Head Over Heels even plays a small role in Lucky in Love.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I want to move to Lucky Harbor! The town and its residents are so energetic, so endearing, that I'm always swept away by the Lucky Harbor books, and Lucky in Love is no exception. A strong addition to an already fantastic series, Lucky in Love is one book fans of contemporary romance should not miss!

This is a Lucky Harbor story, about how Mr. Wrong met The Good Girl of Lucky Harbor. Mr. Wrong is Ty Garrison, an ex- Navy Seal Medic, who after losing his team in a devastating plane crash, which he barely survived himself, resigned his commission. He now works for a covert Government agency that essentially does what he did in the Navy, but not as a medic. He is again recovering from another injury, lured to Lucky Harbor by an old friend, and sparring partner. He lives a tortured existence feeling he can't save anyone, least of all himself.
We then have our Good Girl. Mallory Quinn is a trauma nurse in the Emergency Room. She is convinced she needs to try and save everyone! Her brother Joe is a playboy, her Mom is a nurse in the ER with her, and her sister Tammy is Bad Girl Turned Better, after a wild trip to Vegas. She came home married to a security guard, seems happy in her marriage, and working as a housekeeper at the same hospital. Her sister Karen, Tammy's twin sister, died of a drug over dose, probably self -inflicted when Mallory was sixteen. She couldn't save Karen, she has to try and save everyone else.
Lucky Harbor, Washington is the town of so many previous adventures, and wonderful caring people. Perhaps, they care a little too much sometimes! They now have their own Facebook page, in case anyone missed anything at the Eat Me Café. Ty and Mallory's story is funny, aggravating, tearful, and so SEXY! I would recommend this heartwarming story to anyone who likes to see Wrong and Good meet there happily ever after. Oh, and if you love Chocolate...you will love this novel!

I've read all the Lucky Harbor books. All of them have been WAY more "exciting" than this new addition. I'm not going to tell the story -- I so don't get a reviewer who has to tell the story. The idea of analysis and evaluation is to use incidents of the plot, setting, characterization, theme, and other aspects of the novel as evidence for an opinion. Not to tell the story again.

That said, I'll give some pieces of evidence on which I base my claim. First of all, the characters are not very interesting. An adult, independent woman who is afraid of her mother and still listens to tirades from same about her dating life? Sad. If Mallory is such a great nurse -- in charge and good at decision-making in the ER -- why is she such a wimp when it comes to sticking up for herself -- through the whole book. And when she finally does seem to stick up for herself, do readers get to experience this first hand? Oh no. We get to hear about her big outburst. We've watched her hemming and hawing, not sticking up for her own HSC, waiting for others to let her do something. We've slogged through pages and pages of repetitive excuses for Mallory's "good girl" act (you mean to tell me she was 16 when her sister died and nobody in a contemporary novel thought to get the girl to therapy -- with a nurse as a mom)? And after trudging through all that angst about being a good girl or a bad girl and wearing F-me pumps and eating chocolate -- we don't even get the pleasure of her big scene. And that was the extent of the excitement -- second hand and flat.

As for Ty, lots of hints, no details, then some details, then no details. Then a whole weird thing about a woman who calls him all the time, but that is nothing. Who was he working for? Not quite sure who, but no longer the government.... And what is he being signed-off for? Not really sure. And the whole thing about being a "bad" guy -- never seemed to make any sense at all and wasn't borne by any of his actions, dialogue, or description. Just because he's tall and well-built? Almost every male in Lucky Harbor (doctor, ranger, cop, barkeep) is described that way. Maybe we could buy it if he wore black leather and rode a Harley? Anyway, the climax and his epiphany (in about a paragraph) is all "telling not showing" again. Fizzled like the author wanted to be done with it as much as I did.

When I found myself taking breaks, looking through my stash for other books, then trying to finish this one by flipping pages and scanning, I knew the book was not keeping me interested. And I don't mean scanning with a "need" to find out what happened because I'm on the edge of my seat. No. Just bored. Oh, the kiss of death. This book had zero conflict -- with many opportunities and/or possibilities, from return of missing father to competition for affection/other suitors, to appearance of nasty witch woman from the phone messages. But no...Mallory was so nice and rolled over and played dead, and the book just went plodding along with no surprises whatsoever. Bummer -- because I liked the other books. Read more ›
