4.0 out of 5 stars SONJA HENIE AND JOAN DAVIS IN HIT MUSICAL, January 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: My Lucky Star [VHS] (VHS Tape)
MY LUCKY STAR 1938 was one of Sonja Henie`s biggest hits. In addition to her wonderful displays on ice, Joan Davis made a great and wonderful comic impact as Henie`s roomie. In addition, Fox cast British import Richard Greene as Henie`s loveinterest, Billy Gilbert for comic relief and Buddy Ebsen for some dancin`a n d comic turns as well. I have always wondered about the fuss made of the Astaire-Rogers films at RKO in the 30s. The Astaire at MGM was much better. So for the 30s, the Sonja Henie films are those I would reckomend. They are truly great thanks to glossy production values and great supporting casts...

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite likeable!, July 31, 2011

This review is from: My Lucky Star [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a charming film based on a story written by academy award nominee, Karl Tunberg. It features Sonja Heine as the charming young girl who gets mistaken for a wealthy playboy's mistress. In order to dissuade the tongues that wag, the playboy's company sends her to University to model their clothes for the young college girls. While there she meets a very handsome co-ed portrayed by Richard Greene. Both lead actors have been forgotten somewhat, but their charm lives on in this film. It also features Ceasar Romero in a very young role and the comic relief of Arthur Treacher. It makes for a likeable film. There is only one scene that is somewhat disturbing and that is two men who mistakenly end up kissing under the mistletoe. But other than that, it makes for a nice film to watch at home.

4.0 out of 5 stars How about Sonja Henie on DVD?, January 12, 2011
This review is from: My Lucky Star [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It isn't Sonja Henie I like so much - it's the men that she is paired with in her movies that make them enjoyable today. By today's standards, her skating is rather pedestrian and certainly not up to the calibre of today's skaters. Her acting isn't much to write home about, either. Oh - but the good looking men! My Lucky Star is probably her least-known film because it didn't pair her with one of Fox's more well know leading men (Richard Greene, best know for a Robin Hood TV series from the 1950s and a few Shirley Temple movies). Well unknown or not, he sure was a handsome guy. And so were her other leading men, especially John Payne. Perhaps Fox is dragging it's feet when it comes to putting her films on DVD because they think - 1. there's no market and 2. they are in black and white and no one wants a movie in black and white (oh, but we do!). Hopefully Fox will see their way into releasing these films as "video on demand", the way that Warner Brothers markets their older, and maybe less popular films.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1 OF HER VERY BEST, July 13, 2004
This review is from: My Lucky Star [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a real holiday confection, with an all-star cast - Sonja Henie, Richard Greene, Cesar Romero, Joan Davis and Buddy Ebsen. Roy del Ruth is at the helm and naturally delivers plenty. The musicalnumbers are out of this world and the comedy of Joan Davis hilarious and not A BIT DATED. The jet-set aura is perfect and it`s Hollywood at its most Hollywood. No wonder Sonja was Fox`s box-office queen with the young Shirley Temple.

It`s one of the very best musicals of the 30s.

5.0 out of 5 stars True elegance, January 9, 2010

This review is from: My Lucky Star [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The amazing elegance of this film teaches us that we have lost style, integrity, dignity.
The film transports us into a kind of innocence that we had as children and an optimism that is so truly American.
Henie single handedly turned figure skating into a fine art. Her films should always be re-issued into whatever format is technologically current as they are true classics. I also appreciated the very prompt despatch of this item.
