ABOUT WORKING STIFF: Stephanie Plum with a CSI twist--Annelise Ryan's new cozy mystery series introduces wisecracking nurse-turned-coroner Mattie Winston and the eccentric inhabitants of her small Wisconsin town.

"Ryan, the pseudonym of a Wisconsin emergency nurse, brings her professional expertise to her crisp debut." ~Publishers Weekly

"Mattie Winston's life in small-town Sorenson, Wis., is anything but dull after she takes the job as deputy coroner. Mattie is klutzy and endearing, and there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments." ~ Romantic Times

"A recently-divorced OR nurse accepts the job as assistant to the coroner and her first case involves the murder of her ex-husband's lover, and when her ex becomes the chief suspect, she joins forces with a hunky police detective to find the killer in a debut that is both funny and intricately-plotted." ~ Clues Unlimited

"Annelise Ryan turns in a spiffy series debut with Working Stiff introducing nurse turned coroner's assis¬tant Mattie Winston. Her first crime scene is quite a challenge, however, as the prime suspect is her husband, Dr. Wonderful, and the victim is his mistress. Mattie is a wise-cracking guide to the ins-and-outs of autopsy and crime-solving while managing some pithy commentary on the current state of medical practice courtesy of the author's background as a nurse." ~ Mystery Lovers Bookshop Fall Coffee and Crime Newsletter

ABOUT SCARED STIFF:

"When shocked trick-or-treaters discover the body of model Shannon Tolliver one Halloween night, Mattie Winston investigates in Ryan's sharp second mystery to feature the Sorenson City, Wis., deputy coroner (after 2009's Working Stiff." Publishers Weekly

"Mattie Winston is a likable, humorous heroine with whom readers will readily identify." Romantic Times

"This has the makings of an appealing series on multiple fronts: the forensic details will interest Patricia Cornwell readers, though the tone here is lighter, while the often slapstick humor and the blossoming romance between Mattie and Hurley will draw Evanovich fans who don't object to the cozier mood." Sue O'Brien, Booklist

The ending is left hanging in such a way that there has to be another book.

I've been anxiously awaiting this book as I just loved the previous books. I have to say, this one is not my favorite.

While it was still peppered with a bit of humor that made me laugh out loud, I (and many other reviewers) found that the author took Mattie out of character with the whole casino/gambling thing. If she's trying to set future books up for delving into some sort of gambling problem with Mattie, I'm afraid I'll have to bow out of investing in the rest of this series. I don't want the frustrating overhead - I read to reduce the stress of the day; not to add to it.

What drew me to these books in the first place was, the whole murder plot notwithstanding, the books were light hearted, intelligently written and based on what I see in other customers' reviews, contained nicely developed characters we grew to love.

That said, I am at a loss as to why the author would take a character whom she took great care to craft as a very intelligent woman, and turn her into a total idiot. It's just out of character and I think it detracted from the book and definitely detracted from Mattie.

Additionally, the whole string of unbelievable bad luck, one incident after another, one interruption after another, one obstacle in rapid succession to another, seems a bit much. How many underwear incidents can a person really have? And I won't spoil the ending for you, but it pretty much sucked.

I'd like to see this series lighten up a bit again and not require the reader to suspend belief. Again, I love this author, but this book wasn't a fun read for me.

At the end of the book, you can preview the first chapter in new series by this author. In the sampling I read, we have a protagonist who appears to have a drinking problem.

I love this series and although a little darker this time out, this book is no exception. This book can be read as a stand alone, but the heroine, Mattie has changed so much since Book One that I recommend reading all to enjoy the progression of Mattie and Steve and their constantly thwarted relationship. This book is a lot less wacky, quirky, and humorous than the previous ones, but the mystery aspect is better developed and more complex. The story and the writing seem to be getting more polished with every novel and as always, the peripheral characters are well drawn and compelling and their relationships to each other and the main characters add warmth and depth to the storyline. I absolutely recommend this book to all that love mystery, fun, a little whimsy and some romance-you won't be disappointed.

This writer is so talented and the stories up to this were great. Then she makes Mattie a total loser in this book! In each book she has had trouble but in this one I actually want to knock her up side the head. I find I don't have as much affinity for her now that she has gambled all her money away. Plus the constant eating unhealthy and making jokes about it has gotten really old. From her description she is unhealthy fat but makes jokes about it while she was and still could be a great nurse. Doesn't make sense. I no longer have any sympathy for her!!!!!!!!!

An easy read if you are on a plane or at the beach. Amusing. The premise of a nurse readjusting to work with the dead gets old after a while. Light reading. Her earlier books in this series came out in hardback, this one was a paperback original. Is her publisher losing faith in her?

The Mattie Winston mysteries are great fun. Poor Mattie just never seems to have any luck, although she does survive the latest series of misfortunes and catch the bad guy every time. This book is not for you if you are a serious mystery reader. You will not be on he edge of your seat in suspense. You might, however, fall off the chair altogether laughing at Mattie's predicaments. She has all the problems many women have - love problems, a few extra pounds, wardrobe malfunctions - just larger than life. The only problem with these books is they're over too soon.

I agree with the other reviewers. I truly enjoy this series. Book 4 in the Mattie Winston series has Mattie & Detective "Hunky" Hurley investigating 2 murders. On their way to finding a solution, they prove that for Maddie, that this book should have been called "Unlucky Stiff". You will laugh along with her, cheer her on when she refuses to give up, & cry with her when things go south. This book is well written and a delight to read. I truly recommend it as a must read. I suggest you read the other 3 books first to fill in on the background & because they are great reads too. P.S. The author, Beth Amos: aka Annelise Ryan, has another brand new series coming out this summer called Murder on the Rocks written under another pseudonym of Allyson Abbott. The chapter at the end of Lucky Stiff makes it sound interesting & worth a read!

I have read all the books in this series and agree this one was darker and more like a CSI novel. However, I really enjoyed this just the same. Mattie is a great character. She has grown personally and professionally throughout the series. I also like reading about the secondary characters such as Izzy, Dom, and Mattie's family.

Poor Mattie, however, if she had any luck, it would be little to none! Her relationship with Hurley(a policeman who works with her in her capacity with the ME's office) is so complicated and continues to be so. When the romance heats up, the two of them seem to have more and more obstacles stand in their way. Mattie always seems to get the "short end of the stick" more than once in this book. She weathers each one, but the last one is tough. I truly hope in the next book she overcomes all the adversity and prevails.

This book was wonderful and well worth the wait, but please Ms. Ryan write the next one fast!!!
