I have been a fan of Suzy Bogguss since I bought her debut album soon after its release more than 20 years ago, for which the title track was Somewhere between, a Merle Haggard song. I've been a Hag fan for even longer. This is not the first tribute album to his music I've bought; that was Mama's Hungry Eyes: A Tribute to Merle Haggard, but this is a very different album.

Despite having plenty of Merle's music myself, I think that Suzy knows a lot more about the man and his music than I, or indeed most country music fans, will ever know. It shows here, not only in her recording but in her song selection, which includes some famous songs but also some relatively obscure songs, although I've heard them all before.

Perhaps the least well known songs are The running kind (from the 1978 album A working man can't get nowhere today, and a #12 country hit) and You don't have vey far to go (from his classic album, Branded man, which also included Somewhere between, mentioned earlier). It is not difficult to find the original Merle Haggard recordings of those songs, but the others are even easier to find.

Suzy co-produced the album with her husband, utilizing just six musicians, who don't all play on every track. It's hard to pick favorites among Suzy's versions. I've heard many versions of the opening track but never tire of hearing yet another. I could nominate The running kind, because I don't hear that song as often as the others, but I think I'll give the edge to the title track.

This is a fine album and a magnificent tribute by one great country singer to another.

A few years ago I flew from California to The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs during the New Years holidays to watch and listen in my opinion to one of the greatest female artist of all time. She has such a quality to her voice with effortless tone and volume. Her voice is as pure as pure as one can get and this album shines her voice qualities like no other. I hope this album kick-starts her career again and I look forward to her coming out to the southwest. I have listened to this entire album a few times now just kick'n back with a cold beer reminiscing of old times. I see her schedule is taking her to Washington and Oregon in this month and if I get that spontaneity bug, I just may go see her, who knows, but a great album... fantastic job Suzy!

I was fortunate enough to catch Ms. Bogguss on Larry's Country Diner before this album was released so I've been waiting for the chance to buy it. It was well worth the wait and it doesn't disappoint in the least.

As pointed out by an earlier reviewer, the arrangements are blessedly original but the real treasure here is the sincerity of her delivery, as we had always loved in Merle's original recordings. It adds up to a classic remembrance of what I felt when I first heard these songs and I'm grateful to all the artists and engineers who made this recording such a masterpiece.

Just great listening!!!

I am not a fan of Merle Haggard, let's get that right off. But, I am a huge fan of Suzy Bogguss, so though a bit dubious, I backed her Kickstarter campaign and in due course received the CD. Wow! Suzy sounds better than ever, and the love she has for Merle shines through in every cut. From top to bottom, every cut is top notch. Great musicians backing her provide a solid base for her vocals to take you to heartache, fun, introspection and many other places Merle writes about.I particularly like "Today I Started Loving You Again", "The Bottle Let Mr Down" and "You Don't have Very Far To Go". If you like Classic Country done right, with love and skill, buy this album, you won't be disappointed, I promise.

I've always loved Suzy Bogguss, but an entire album of great Merle Haggard songs is just too good to imagine! As the title here says, this is a very fitting tribute to the great Merle Haggard.

Being a life-long Haggard devotee, there have been very few covers of his music that could rival his original versions for me. In general, most covers are done in the same arrangement as the originals and to compete with Merle's voice and band is a losing proposition for the most part. I think that what makes this album special is that Suzy does fresh arrangements on every song, and the instrumentation is consistent throughout (making this truly feel like an album, not just a collection of songs or tribute). It is very atmospheric, and hard to categorize. Mostly guitar, organ, and harmonica. On some cuts, it reminded me of Merle's "If I could only fly," which was (at the time) a different sound for him. In addition, Suzy's voice is one of the best of her generation. I love Emmylou and Linda Ronstadt, and Suzy reminds me of both of them. I still have "Somewhere Between," but I kind of lost track of her after she became more mainstream in the 90's. This is one of the best albums I've heard in years. When I saw the song selection, there were a few songs that I didn't think would fit her. The biggest surprise to me is her version of "Running kind," which is terrific (and one of the best Haggard covers I have heard). I also love that she did "Going where the lonely go," which is one of my favorite songs by Hag. I hope this album gets the attention it deserves, and turns more people on to both Suzy and Merle's music. Now, to find the CD with the 2 bonus cuts!
