Editorial Reviews

If Keith Richards, Joan Jett and Ray Charles could somehow spawn a love child, it'd be Romi Mayes. Hailing from Winnipeg, Canada, Mayes has chipped away at the rock and roll stone over the past couple of decades, and now, this Juno nominated, CFMA nominated, four time WCMA award winner, has done it again. Lucky Tonight stamps one more victory in this bad ass guitar playin lady's discography. Inspired by what another Winnipeg raised artist, Neil Young, did with Time Fades Away, Mayes recorded an album of all unreleased and unrecorded songs live and in one take at a sold out concert. This kind of risk exemplifies Mayes in all she does and goes in tow with her ballsy, heart on her sleeve and straight shootin' attitude. Her raw, edgy songs take no prisoners and tell it like it is. Not at all a one speed driver, Romi Mayes can also gear down the big rig and hypnotize you with honest sultry, sweet and sexy tunes that have schooled young men and made grown men cry.

In the past, Romi Mayes has sometimes leaned towards the folk side of country, but on Lucky Tonight, she takes a decidedly more aggressive bluesy, rock-influenced direction. When in folk-country mode, her voice can be reminiscent of Tracy Grammer in that she manages to sound clean without sounding saccharine, which is a very difficult balance to strike (which is why I usually prefer singers like Gillian Welch to certain popular bluegrass-influenced singers). However, there is a bit more Lucinda Williams in her voice on this album. Her voice doesn't crack the way Lucinda's does, but the intensity is here. The resulting sound is a mix of sultry and aggressive, which perfectly suits the subjects of the songs, and the stripped-down country/blues/rock sound of the album.

The accompaniment is minimal here, and consists primarily of Mayes' own rhythm guitar, and the lead electric guitar work of Jay Nowicki (and sometimes nobody else). Nowicki's playing here combines blues, rock and a slight country twang in a similar way to how the late Jesse "Guitar" Taylor used to play (don't know the name? check out Joe Ely or the rest of the Lubbock crowd...). Nowicki's playing also shows a hint of the kind of tonal control and restraint exercised by Bo Ramsey (the guy who always plays for Greg Brown, Lucinda Williams and many others). The sound of Nowicki's guitar really shines partially due to the lack of other accompaniment, giving the album a unique sound that should appeal to anyone who appreciates the intersection of blues, rock and country.
