It Feels Fresh,
By
This review is from: Lucky featuring Colbie Caillat (MP3 Download)
In a world of corporate radio cramming talentless and stupid songs down our throat, I find this one surprising. Have to admit, when I heard "featuring Colbie Cailat" I let out a groan and my expectations were low (I am NOT a fan). But, I love it.
Why? HARMONY. I mean, it's an actual duet. Not the crap that's usually put out there as a duet between a couple artists where I-sing-and-then-you-sing-and-then-we'll-sing-together-but-usually-the-same-notes-so-we-don't-get-confused. There's actual harmony in this song...and it even varies a little with some counter-melody. I didn't think anyone knew how to do that anymore! So, even though the song is simplistic (it's a bit cheesy to the point that I thought Cailat might have written it, but then the sound of it just wasn't hers), I enjoy it. It's pure in it's vocals (we don't always need a bunch of production and guitar and noise) and a little more complex than it sounds. Biggest reason to like it? Like so many Mraz songs, I just feel happy when I hear it. The intro puts a smile on my face and I can't help it. For someone who usually likes angst-ridden music, that's saying a lot!

Love Lucky,

This song hits close to home. If you are happy and in love, then you will be able to really appreciate this song. Granted, there are many songs out there that already have the same type of content, but they are mostly over-played. This is a new love song to enjoy that reminds you to be appreciative of what you have in life, which is definitely need in this economy. I love Jason Mraz's song and Colbie Caillat really adds a great hint of femininity to this song without making it too mushy. I give it an "A."

I was in a store, and heard this song. Usually I can't identify the artist if it is a pop artist, but right away, I thought it might be these two. I also thought it was a great song with a very catchy tune. It's a very happy sort of song.
I heard "I'm Yours" on American Idol, and loved it. And I recently became familiar with Colbie Caillat's music, and I like her simple style.

There is no doubt about Jason Mraz this past year. He really showed that he can make more mature songs as a singer, rather than being someone who has been a novelty the past several years on songs like The Remedy and Wordplay. He definitely has shown a lot of depth as a songwriter well with his last single I'm Yours, and now his latest single shows he is not about to be in the spotlight alone. His latest work, Lucky, partnered with Colbie Caillat who scored big last year with bubbly, on his second single from We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things is a very mellow intimate duet. The two of them have good chemistry, but unfortunately, I was a bit dissapointed that the song was a bit short. I honestly thought it could've been longer. It isn't a bad song, but should've had more appeal in time. I do hope though that they could do more good songs together though. Colbie is a very simplistic singer, and Jason has grown nicely.
Song: C+

Not great but good.,

This is a fluffy song that Jason wrote like I'm Yours that also seems to have caught on. These two songs are but a glimpse, and a poor one, of Jason Mraz as an artist. His true talent lies in the 70 + songs that he has written over the past 8 years that never make it to the radio or never even make it onto his albums. He does not have to wait 4 years like a Gavin Degraw to come up with songs, he is constantly writing. Look up his live stuff or buy some live albums and you will see how his talent is far beyond anyone else on the radio today.

I was not familiar with either Mraz or Caillat until I saw them performing this live on Saturday night recently (3/09). Earlier in the show, Mraz performed "I'm yours" live (sans Caillat). I've been humming that all day! And this. Since Saturday night! Haunting songs, great performance, and, y'know - for those of us with mountains of CD's and other space-sponging media... why not go green and footprint-less? 79 cents, and it's a crisp and clear and happening track! A sweet duet.
If you saw the SNL performance, and liked their two featured songs - it's really easy to pick them up "here" and play them back to back, which is interesting... similar groove. (I'm not paid to say this.) :-) It really is sweet and lovely, and listening to it again I can picture this very melodious couple, hitting the notes and rhythm with spunk and love.

Luckless love,

Jason Mraz hit the scene early in the millennium with his big hit "Remedy." He showed some creativity in his wordplay, and brought a fresh sound to pop music. In his "Lucky" duet with cheese queen Colbie Caillat,it seems his luck has ran out.
"Lucky" is quasi-country,with every cliche dredged up from the depths of the sea. Mraz sings about sailing across the sea to Caillat's island to put a flower in her hair. She sings about missing him. They sing "I'm lucky to be in love with my best friend" and how lucky they are to be with each other. Mraz hits the falsetto while Caillat sings in her happy face style. Nothing original. Jason Mraz, like his contemporary Gavin Degraw, seems to have lost his touch. "Lucky" is unlucky when it comes to an original melody, let alone original lyrics. If you hear "Lucky" endlessly piped in at work, you're unlucky indeed. |
