Book Description

Regency Romance June 28, 1998
SHE RELUCTANTLY RESCUED THE ROGUE--
NOW HE'S DETERMINED TO RESCUE HER!

Miss Lucy Preston pulls a wounded smuggler from the quicksand of the Lancashire beaches, and she soon rues the day. For the rascal immediately sees through her disguise and that of her heavily veiled companion--who, indeed, is not a mute, elderly woman but a frightened young lady running from danger and seeking refuge at this remote seaside cottage.

Happily acknowledging he has just landed in a truly fascinating melodrama, Christopher Valliant is determined to aid the fair damsels. For this reformed rake is motivated by the most noble reason of all: love--pure and glorious--for the lovely, temperamental, and ever-so-delightful Lucy!

Editorial Reviews

Review

A one time schoolteacher and governess, Lucy Jennet Preston is in disguise to frighten away anyone who might come near the cottage where she is hiding Diana Whitney. There is a large reward for the return of Diana who is the ward of her uncle. Diana fears him for very good reasons plus he wants her to marry a man she does not favor. While Lucy is out one night, she sees several lights on the beach, a horse and wagon, and then she hears gun shots. She investigates and ends up saving a man's life. Kit Valiant is out for a bit of fun and adventure when the plan goes awry. He is trapped under a box and needs assistance getting free. Though Lucy is wary of him, she helps him and then takes Kit to the cottage where she and a disguised Diana bandage his gunshot wound. Then, while Lucy is away, Kit accidentally finds a hidden Diana and she tells him her story. From then on, Kit takes over and runs the show. Kit knows almost immediately that he loves Lucy, but while she loves him, she cannot see a future with the fun loving, adventurous rogue who happens to be domineering and used to getting his own way. Besides, he's an earl's brother. While Kit is busy arranging Diana's freedom, he is also coordinating his future with Lucy in a way that exasperates her, but as Kit tells her, 'Sometimes the facts take a while to catch up with the truth.' This is a sweet regency romance so there is no bad language or hot and heavy sex. The chemistry between Lucy and Kit is a kick to read because as Kit admits, he's a real burr in her side and she gets totally annoyed and frustrated with him. The plot is good too, but you don't know what is really going on until chapter six!Lucy In Disguise is wonderful and delightful! Ms. Kerstan is truly a talented author! Lucy In Disguise is a regency romance that is sure to please any audience! Lynn Kerstan reigns supreme with her newest romance Lucy In Disguise! Lynn Kerstan moves onto my personal short list of must-read Regency authors with Lucy in Disguise. This is a snappy, fast-paced, entertaining tale with a wonderfully witty hero, an intriguing plot, and enough charm to win over the most blase of readers. I found Kit to be a most delightful and unusual hero. Lucy was...equally compelling. There is a small owl named Fidgets who steals a few scenes. And there are a couple of scenes involving fake sorcery and a neighbor's ball which are priceless. -- The Romance Reader, Sept. 1998

Ms. Kerstan's evocative ambiance wonderfully colors an enchanting love story featuring a deliciously insouciant hero and a feisty hero to match. -- Romantic Times, Sept. 1998

The plot takes on a humdinger of a suspense story as well as humorous antics. All has been skillfully woven together to create a perfectly delightful tale. Entertaining characters, not to mention a heartwarming romance. -- Rendezvous, June 1998

This is a quick-witted, fast paced Regency featuring two headstrong lead characters caught up in a game of intrigue, danger and romance. I loved the dialog between Kit and Lucy, which was sharp and humorous. . . . Kit's determination in wooing and pursuing Lucy is something every woman dreams of. Add a lovely, tragic heroine in Diana and a little owl named Fidgets, and you have a truly delightful story that will appeal to any Regency fan. -- Old Book Barn Gazette, Sept. 1998

From the Publisher

Working in the Subsidiary Rights Department requires me to read books from every genre that Ballantine publishes, including Romances. Having never read a Regency Romance before, I was curious as to what attracts such a large and devoted readership. For me, reading LUCY IN DISGUISE proved a wonderful introductory lesson to Regencies. This story of adventure, disguise, drama, and secrets (only some of which are well-kept) has a little bit of everything for everyone; fans of mystery, romance, historical fiction, and adventure books will all be satisfied by LUCY IN DISGUISE.

-- Brooke Sperry, Subsidiary Rights Assistant

4.0 out of 5 stars A FUN BOOK, November 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lucy in Disguise (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book follows the rules of a Regency without being 'young girl goes to London for her Season and tames the rake.' Good read. The rescue on the beach that is the opening scene is very well done. . . and memorable. I looked for and read Kerstan's other books about Christopher's brothers. . .however, I think this one was the best.

This book is terrific-- a Regency romp that takes place in a fascinating non-London setting. Kerstan's prose is dashing and lively and suits the spunky heroine and hero.

I think this is one of a trilogy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Effort to Finish, May 18, 2005

This review is from: Lucy in Disguise (Regency Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved Kit from Celia's Grand Passion so I had looked forward to reading his story. But this book was so bad that I had to make a real effort to finish it. Kit meets up with Lucy (who calls herself Luke as she was pretending to be a boy) on the beach on night while smuggling. He was shot and she helped him escape and bind his wound. Diana (who I am guessing will figure in the story with the last brother) is the only interesting person in this draggy story. Nice to see Celia and Kendal again and their baby. But the romance between Lucy and Kit was flat and had no spark. The mystery was flat, too. A good romance has to have wit, romance, spark and an interesting premise. All these were missing from the regency. A romance between Kit and Lucy was forced and did not seem real. The bad guys, if they are such, are also not interesting nor dangerous.
