5.0 out of 5 stars Atmosphere's best
Last summer a friend of mine introduced me to hip-hop, namely the underground variety, claiming that Atmosphere made the best available. I've listened to quite a few name underground acts for almost a year now, and surely Slug is one of the best MCs to ever hold a mic. While my buddy claimed that Atmosphere's debut "Overcast!" was their finest, Spawn (Slug's...

2.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE DON'T BE FOOLED BY THESE OTHER REVIEWS!!!!!!!
this is NOT,i repeat NOT five stars!in all honesty it's more like 1.5 or 2 stars and i'm a big fan of slug & atmosphere.albums like overcast, godlovesugly, the felt project, and the dynospectrum album is much better than this.though the lyrics are thought provoking, but slug has been better, the production doesn't hold up.it's some of the weakest i've heard from...

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmosphere's best, April 8, 2003

Last summer a friend of mine introduced me to hip-hop, namely the underground variety, claiming that Atmosphere made the best available. I've listened to quite a few name underground acts for almost a year now, and surely Slug is one of the best MCs to ever hold a mic. While my buddy claimed that Atmosphere's debut "Overcast!" was their finest, Spawn (Slug's old rhyming partner) just doesn't do that much for me. But here--on an album comprised of two EPs and vinyl singles--it's just Slug with arguably Ant's best beats backing him up. For those that have heard "If I Was Santa Claus" they know that this album is the real deal. Some of Slug's stories make comparisons to Bob Dylan necessary. "The Woman With the Tattooed Hands" paints pictures with every bar Slug spits, and I won't even guess how he's inspired to write such original and beautiful "poems." I put poems in quotations because in a recent issue of "GQ" America's current Poet Laureate told Terrence Rafferty that poetry readings aren't accompanied by beats or bass. However, while many will say that so many rappers are poets, Slug is a true example. If this was an a cappella album one would still realize how he's not always about rhymes or being clever. And he's not trying to prove he's badder than anyone else. Slug isn't emo as a musical genre, but he is emotional. However, his self-deprecating style and personality quirks shine through so much that one feels a connection to him. That is why he is so profound. I realize that many fans go on and on about him without acknowledging Ant's production, but that's the way it is. To hear Slug is to hear one of the most direct and cleanest voices in hip-hop, a man who raps short stories. If you have no faith in hip-hop I honestly believe that "Lucy Ford" is a masterwork worthy of your attention. For those who don't come away feeling enlightened I feel bad for you. This is straightforward and powerful. Not only does it make you think there's something more than gold chains, cars, and bling-bling, you no longer care about the current state of the mainstream when listening. Slug's aura washes that away. For that I say thank you to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the CD you want, January 31, 2004

I would consider myself a pretty hardcore Atmosphere fan, and I'd agree with other reviews that this is their best album. People might tell you that the newer stuff is better, because the beats are more mainstream, and if that's your thing, then whatever go for it. But if you like Hip-Hop, straight up, this is the album you want. Although they've got a bunch of songs that weren't released on any album (probably on Sad Clown Bad Dub, but you have to buy that at their shows or on ebay) that are really good, if you want a full album of hot tracks, this is it. five stars all the way

To make it easy for you people. Buy this CD!!! I stopped listing to rap on the radio due to the fact it all sounds the same. I can remember the old scholl like it was yesterday and these guys just bring it right back. They tell stories that you can see with your ears and beats you can see with your eyes. The midwest is putting life back into real hip-hop

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of This Atmosphere, June 16, 2004
This review is from: Lucy Ford (Audio CD)
The combination of Slug (an amazing MC) and ANT (an amazing producer) is, well, amazing. With four CDs released to date, `The Lucy Ford LP' is the best. I first heard this CD in my friend's car and was attracted to the catchy `Guns and Cigarettes'. Little did I know that within months Atmosphere would become one of my favorite hip hop groups and that `Guns and Cigarette's would be pushed aside by something much greater. Slug may not be one of the best MCs structurally, but very few can paint a better picture. Slug illustrates his storytelling abilities with `Nothing But Sunshine' (a fictional account of Slug's life) and `The Woman With the Tattooed Hands' (an amazing story of beauty and symbolism), `Lucy Ford's two best tracks. But honestly, every song except `Aspiring Sociopath' is at least good, but most are great. His lyrical content ranges from serious to funny, but every track is very personal and they hold very well together as one album despite their differences. Solid production by ANT (although not his best with Atmosphere). `The Lucy Ford LP' is an amazing CD and is one of underground hip hop's best.

(4.5/5 mics)

5.0 out of 5 stars how can you not like Atmosphere?, February 11, 2005
This review is from: Lucy Ford (Audio CD)
this and seven's travels...to me...are the best Atmosphere albums out there. I'm sure there are alot of nay-sayers about the previous seven's travels comment, but either way, "Lucy Ford" is THE Atmosphere album to have. Slug is at the peak of his style throughout the entire cd and ANT's production is at...not his best...but most relaxed...fitting for slug's style of flow. If you're just getting into Atmosphere, this is the album to buy. And although the cd is called an EP...its an LP comprised of 2 LP's and a cassette tape. all the songs are excellent so i'm not going to list the best ones...because i know if i do, then someone's just gonna bootleg those said tracks and not support the artist. BUY THIS AND CRY TEARS OF JOY...hip hop lives on....through the valley of the shadow of the maintstream market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, August 11, 2007

This is a classic and fabulous album. I own lots of Atmosphere, but this is the album that never gets old. It was the only CD in my almost-broken car stereo for most of last year and never got overplayed. I give copies of it to all of my friends curious about Atmosphere and no one has ever not loved it. The writing is brilliant and the beats are simple but funked up enough to always keep things interesting. If you like poetry via hip-hop beats you can't go wrong with this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, best Atmosphere album I've heard, May 8, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lucy Ford (Audio CD)
This album is an exquisite example of Atmosphere's versatility, both as a writer and a rapper. Slug's lyrics are more than most of today's typical rap lyrics; he incorporates character development and imagery, building a story as well as a song. On such songs as "Aspiring Sociopath" and "Woman With the Tattooed Hands", Atmosphere shows their ability to match the mood of the lyrics with a beat. Other songs, such as "Guns and Cigarettes", show Slug's versatility, as his lyrics go from self-loathing to mockery, then to character development. Some songs on the album weren't worthwhile for me, and I found myself skipping through them. "Don't Ever F------ Question That", "Tears For The Sheep", and "If I Was Santa Claus" tarnish the otherwise impeccable album. "The Lucy Ford EPs" is a must-have album for anybody who appreciates good music.

W. Holliday "R.E.D.D." doesn't know what he's talkin about. I am a fan of older slug when he was with spawn. this album is right up there with his older stuff (headshots, overcast, dynospectrum, and felt). the production & lyrics are both dope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must cop hip hop, December 7, 2004
This review is from: Lucy Ford (Audio CD)
This is what music is supposed to be, lyrically enhanced. Goes against the grain on the today's hip hop cliche. It's not just some randomly placed words that don't mean a thing. Pick this up, and ya won't put it down. Ever since the mid-90s when they were just getting big in the Twin Cities, my crew's been listening to them. Intelligent lyrical content backed up by some of the most addictive beats in the industry. You won't be dissapointed!

in my opinion, this is atmosphere's best album, and works great as a full album. no filler. no hits to pull off of this one (except maybe tattoo'd hands), but they're all great songs that make a great album. slug grew up some between outcast! and lucy/ford, and it shows and it pays off. get this album.
