Decent Song for a Greater Cause,
By Mark Arnold "movie/tv, comic book and animati... (Saratoga, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lucy (Audio CD)
Julian Lennon puts out his first release in almost a decade. "Lucy" is a tribute to the girl that inspired The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", even though some wags still feel that it was LSD. Here's the proof: a reproduction of the original drawing by Julian Lennon is included with the disc and in some cases, Julian's autograph. My copy unfortunately did not have the autograph. As for the music, it is very pleasant and open to repeat listenings. However, those pining for the John Lennonish-type vocals that graced Julian's first couple of albums will be sorely disappointed. Julian has a fine singing voice, but no longer any of the nasal quality that his father had. Overall, not the best material Julian has ever done, but far from the worst.
As far as the greater cause is concerned, the real Lucy died recently of Lupus and royalties from this release will be donated to Lupus research.

"Lucy" is a wonderful song for a great cause.,
This review is from: Lucy (Audio CD)
James Scott Cook & Julian Lennon did a wonderful job on this EP. I love the song "Lucy" and can't get it out of my head. Both the full band version & acoustic version are just fantastic. I am in the belief that if a music artist can play an excellent acoustic version of their song, then it shows just how talented they truly are. And they did just that. In my opinion, both are very talented musicians & music writers.
The additional two songs on the EP, "Sober", which will be on James Scott Cook's album due out this year, & "Beautiful" by Julian Lennon, are also just wonderful. If you love 80's music, which I have been noticing the 80's sound is coming back, you will definitely love James Scott Cook's, "Sober". It's written with an 80's style but with a fresh, modern sound. Hearing both "Lucy" & "Sober" I am definitely going to get a copy of his new album when it's released. Julian Lennon's "Beautiful", which will be on his upcoming album, "Everything Changes" due out this spring, is just that...beautiful. I absolutely love it! Julian has really matured in his writing abilities as each album just keeps getting better and better. Therefore, I'm really looking forward to his new album as well. His album "Photograph Smile" is definitely one of my favorite albums by anyone & I have a feeling "Everything Changes" will also be added to that list. This is definitely worth the purchase, not only for the great music, but also because the proceeds are going for a great cause. The money is being donated to The Lupus Foundation of America & The St. Thomas Lupus Trust in the UK to aid in Lupus research.

Beautiful ...,
This review is from: Lucy (Audio CD)
I bought this EP CD because I wanted to see the drawing that inspired "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" an unbelieveable song!
To my pleasant surprise these are really good songs. But the jewell is "Beautiful" I have listened to the song at least 10 times in just 1/2 day. What a great melody. I cannot believe that this did not get any airplay! This song is really really powerful. I am curious who he wrote it for ... his mother, his absent father? I highly recommend this EP. Plus some of the money goes to a good cause.

Lucy and accompanying tracks Sober and Beautiful are a perfect mix together. They are beautifully melodic, lyrically sound and well produced. The songs themselves are poignant for the cause they serve including the two Lucy's they highlight. Quite why we don't hear much of Jules (since Photograph Smile) (an exceptional album by the way) is quite beyond me. Beautiful songs good cause. JohnLucy

I have to say that even IF I didn't receive an autographed copy in either of the two "Lucy" discs I purchased, I am not disappointed in the least. It truly makes me kick into anticipation mode as I look forward to the spring 2010 release of Julian's next album. This short EP is well worth the $6 spent to enjoy both versions of "Lucy", plus the 2 additional tracks. Julian has surely teamed with a fascinating and gifted musical collaborator in James Cook. The two "other" songs have a warmth and yet a kick to them that indeed make you look forward, not backwards as some would be tempted to do, unfairly, and unwisely.

<sigh> Bland.,

I really wanted to like this little disc: Julian seems like a decent man with at least a dollop of his father's musical gifts. Plus, the title song has a great back story, and a portion of the proceeds go to a good cause. Unfortunately, "Lucy" is bland. It just kind of sits there, inert, not really going anywhere. Come on, Julian -- a little more vigor!

Julian's First Release In A Decade, Worth The Wait (sort of..),
By Cesar Reyes (-------, USA) - See all my reviews

Other people have stated the story of how this EP came to fruition so I'm just gonna do a track by track write up.
LUCY - A jangly, feel good song that glides along perfectly. As another reviewer stated, this song is dedicated to people that have been affected by Lupus and it's a great song for the cause. It's not some bleak dirge, it's a cheerful sunny pop tune that will hopefully drum up some smiles and funds for people that need it. LUCY (ACOUSTIC) - Just a simple run through the song by James and Julian, nothing special. Sober - James Scott Cook is an artist I hope to hear more from. "Sober" is a fantastic track with a pulsating rhythm and crooner-esque vocals from JSC. His voice is unique although the production is very 80's tinged, something that seems to be coming back to the charts. I bought the EP because of JL but this song has made me a James Scott Cook fan. Beautiful - The closer, a great mournful song that is difficult to listen to. Difficult in the sense that you can hear Julian struggling with the vocal which I'll chalk up to the personal nature of the lyrics. It's very affecting to hear him not hit the notes quite perfectly versus just using auto tune to punch in any bum notes, good on you Julian! 5 Stars

Lucy Revisited and Remembered,

This EP contains the most recent music we've heard from Julian Lennon since the release of his last album, "Photograph Smile" in over ten years. The wait has been well worth it.
This four song collection consists of two versions of the song called "Lucy". The first is a studio version with a band and the second is an acoustic version. The song is a duet with James Scott Cook, who initially wrote the song about his grandmonther, Lucy, who suffers from Lupus. Ironically enough, a childhood friend of Julian's, Lucy Vodden, was also suffering from Lupus. She is the same Lucy who inspired the Beatles hit, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds." After many years, Julian and Lucy reconnected and found out she suffered from Lupus. While recording the song, Lucy passed away due to an infection related to the disease, in September of 2009. To honor Lucy's memory, bring awareness to Lupus, as well as honor the still living grandmother of Mr. Cook, Julian and James reworked the song and it became what it is. The song is the opposite of what one would think. A horrible and deadly disease that claimed the life of a dear friend, one would think the song would be a sad ballad. But it isn't. "Lucy" is catchy and uplifting. Rather than focusing on the sadness and mourning a friend, they chose to celebrate her life instead and focus on the positive. Both Julian and James have powerful voices, but somehow they manage not to drown each other out. An interesting blend, to say the least. There are two other original songs on the EP as well. "Sober" written by James, will be featured on his upcoming album, a catchy 80's sounding song. James proves he has the singing, guitar playing, and songwriting ability to take on the more well known musicians of today. "Beautiful" is written and performed by Julian, on his upcoming release, "Everything Changes". It is a ballad, speaking of loss and hope. Julian makes no secret of the fact that he had his father as well as others in his life that he has lost in mind when he wrote the song. Julian proves his talent has matured over the years and his versatility as a singer/songwriter has continued to blossom. I highly recommend this EP. Two talented musicians team up for a great song and a great cause.
