4.0 out of 5 stars great set for beginning collectors
This 2-disc set from Madacy Entertainment comprises 10 great episodes from THE LUCY SHOW. This sitcom told the story of widows Lucy Carmichael (Lucille Ball) and Viv Bagley (Vivian Vance) raising their children together in upstate New York. Later on, the series changed when Lucy traveled to California to be the secretary to grumpy banker Mr Mooney (Gale Gordon). This...

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Shows, Horrible Quality.
I recently found this two-pack in a bargain bin for five bucks, Being a Lucy fan I snatched it up and brought it home. Well all I can say is that I'm glad I only paid five bucks for it. I recently found this two-pack in a bargain bin for five bucks, Being a Lucy fan I snatched it up and brought it home. Well all I can say is that I'm glad I only paid five bucks for it. On the up side the shows are highly entertaining and they highlight an era in television that rarely receives it's due, But on the down side the tranfer looks like it's been pooped on and at times all you see is a white screen with an outline of Lucy. But the shows almost make this DVD a good value, bottom line! BUY IT FOR FIVE BUCKS. Any higher it's a bad value.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice of episodes, September 20, 1999
This review is from: The Lucy Show, Vol. 2 (DVD)
Not as good as I Love Lucy these four episodes of her later show don't do Lucy justice. Another thing is the quality. DVD's are supposed to be of high quality but they used a very bad film copy when they made this. It even jumps in a couple places! I'm taking mine back to the store.

3.0 out of 5 stars LUCY, GOOD, DVD, BAD, July 3, 2004
This review is from: The Lucy Show, Vol. 2 (DVD)
The Lucy show DVD set was cheap. There were no official air dates of each episode, which would be good information for fans, and the episodes were not restored much, and, all of the episodes are out of order...like the first 4 are in color, and then theres one from the first 3 seasons, in black and white...I'd wait for a better edition DVD package unless you're a diehard fan, but, on the record, they picked some fairly good episodes for this 10 episode DVD 2 pack! The shower episode, Lucy takes vacation and new roommate episodes were great!

This set features eps from both phases of the series.

"Lucy the Starmaker" - Lucy notices Mr Cheever's nephew (Frankie Avalon) has a great singing voice and decides to help launch his entertainment career.

"Lucy Meets Robert Goulet" - When a truck-driver gets turned down for a loan, Lucy notices he resembles Robert Goulet and enters him in a look-alike contest. This episode also features a young Lucie Arnaz playing one of Lucy's secretary friends.

"Lucy Gets a Roommate" - Lucy receives more than she bargained for with her latest flatmate, eccentric librarian Carol Bradford (guest star Carol Burnett).

"Lucy and Carol in Palm Springs" - Lucy feigns illness and joins Carol's band for a golfing tournament engagement, unaware that Mr Mooney is one of the entrants.

"Lucy's Barbershop Quartet" - Lucy wants to join Viv's barbershop group, but she doesn't make much of an impression with her whisper-soft rendition of `Down By the Old Mill Stream'. Perhaps an eccentric voice coach (guest star Hans Conreid) can help?

"Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower" - Trying to save money, Lucy and Viv attempt to install a shower in the boys' bedroom.

"Lucy's Substitute Secretary" - Lucy calls off her Lake Arrowhead vacation when she discovers her efficient replacement (guest star Ruta Lee).

"Lucy and the French Movie Star" - Lucy attempts to stave off the advances of the bank's newest celebrity client (guest star Jacques Bergerac).

"Main Street USA" - Lucy joins forces with a local town who are fighting against developers wanting to put a freeway through beloved Main Street.

"Lucy Meets Sheldon Leonard" - Lucy mistakes the bank's newest celebrity client for a bank robber.

Pretty good box set for the money. Extras include a trivia quiz and some classic commercials.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'll second the "poor quality" complaint..., October 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lucy Show, Vol. 2 (DVD)
I was also a bit disappointed when I saw the poor quality of the picture in this DVD. It looks like it was recorded off the TV. It looks a little fuzzy and washed out if you ask me. Also what the other customer said about skipping, mine does that too.

However, it's still possible to enjoy if you put the poor quality aside, so I gave it 3 stars.

If picture quality isn't that important to you, then you might be interested. If picture quality is of high importance to you, however, I would probably skip to the next one...

4.0 out of 5 stars more "Lucy" favourites, August 30, 2010

Alpha, the most venerable of all the budget-priced DVD companies, recycles the same old episodes of THE LUCY SHOW that have fallen into public domain limbo. Serious "Lucy" fans have probably purchased these eps over and over again, but the price is right for the casual viewers too.

Five years after the last episode of "I Love Lucy" aired, Lucille Ball was back at CBS, sans Desi Arnaz (whom she had divorced by this point) for another shot at sitcom success. THE LUCY SHOW cast Ball as Lucille Carmichael, a widow who lived with her best friend Vivian Bagley (Vivian Vance) and their respective children in a large house in upstate New York. The show was later re-tooled, with Lucy moving to California to work as a secretary for bank manager Mr. Mooney (Gale Gordon).

Episodes:

"Little Old Lady Lucy" - Lucy masquerades as an elderly millionairess in order to attract a new customer for the bank.

"Lucy and the Monkey" - Overworked Lucy believes an escaped monkey, let loose in Mooney's office, is actually Mr. Mooney himself!

"Lucy and the Ring-a-Ding-Ding" - Whilst admiring a ring that Mooney has purchased for his wife, Lucy tries it on her finger where it promptly becomes stuck.

"Viv Visits Lucy" - Lucy and Viv go undercover as hippies on the Sunset Strip when they learn that one of their friends' sons has supposedly "gone native".

"Lucy and John Wayne" - Lucy disrupts production of John Wayne's latest film when she delivers bank papers to the set.

I was also a bit disappointed in the quality of this DVD. DVDs are supposed to be of the best quality in picture and sound. Mine looks a little fuzzy and washed out - like it was recorded on VHS off the TV, and yes, mine skips in some spots, also. The fact that this show originally aired in the '60s is no excuse. I've got VHS tapes of The Lucy Show which are better quality than this DVD. My husband is collecting the DVDs of the classic Star Trek episodes, and the picture and sound quality of those is excellent - better even than the VHS tapes he has of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which aired roughly 30 years after the classic series aired. If a DVD company (or whoever makes the DVDs - I don't know) can go through the trouble of making sure that the DVDs of the classic Star Trek series are of excellent quality, then they *could* do the same for The Lucy Show, no? Getting good quality film, restoration, etc. It is possible to enjoy if you put the poor quality aside, so I gave this DVD 2 stars.

If good quality isn't too important to you, you might be interested - The price isn't all that high compared to other DVDs, which probably reflects the poor quality. However, if it is of high importance to you, I'd skip over this one...

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother With Poor Quality Public Domain Episodes/Wait for Official Season Releases by CBS/Paramount Home Entertainment, December 4, 2010
This review is from: Lucy Show - Volume 2 (DVD)
Don't bother with the public domain episodes of "The Lucy Show." You're throwing away your money. The audio and video quality isn't very good. Buy the official season releases of "The Lucy Show." We already have seasons one through three out. Season four should be out sometime in March 2011. You won't believe the difference between the shabby quality of the public domain episodes and the unbelievable quality of the official releases. It's like they were filmed a month ago. In addition you get great bonus features. So stop buying the same 30 episodes. I was fooled twice and decided to wait for the real thing.
