Grade 4-9?In spite of the series title, this well-written, information-rich book focuses on the composer's professional career and personal affairs, and not his physical challenge. From his youth to the custody battle for his nephew, Beethoven's life is assembled piece by piece. Readers are introduced to the man's successes and failures; financial hard times as well as windfalls are described. The illnesses that Beethoven suffered, and often dwelled upon, are discussed at greater length than his deafness. The black-and-white drawings depict his patrons, family, and love interests, as well as a few of his personal items, such as his "ear trumpet." A helpful glossary of basic music terms is appended.?Allison Trent Bernstein, Blake Middle School, Medfield, MA
