Book Description

November 13, 2002 Men-at-Arms (Book 377)
The Luftwaffe, honed in the Spanish Civil War, played a vital part in Germany's 'Blitzkrieg' victories during the 1939-41 period of World War II. Badly overstretched by war on three fronts in 1942-44, it was crippled by an incompetent commander-in-chief, the losses among experienced aircrew, and shortage of fuel. In 1944-45 it faced a final battle of attrition in skies ruled by the Allies as the Eastern and Western pincers closed on the Reich; but until the very end the dwindling band of veteran pilots - among them the greatest 'aces' the world has ever known - presented a potent threat. This fact-packed review of Luftwaffe uniforms and flying kit is illustrated with rare personal photos, insignia charts, and two dozen meticulously detailed colour figures.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Modelers, re-enactors and historians alike will appreciate this book by Robert F. Stedman... It is a wealth of detail about clothing and gear... Mr. Stedman...extenuates the academic with additional facts beyond the obvious... Your eye for detail will be busy." -Fred Boucher, Aeroscale

From the Publisher

Packed with specially commissioned artwork, maps and diagrams, the Men-at-Arms series is an unrivalled illustrated reference on the history, organisation, uniforms and equipment of the world's military forces, past and present.

4.0 out of 5 stars Luftwaffe Air & Ground Crews 1939-1945, January 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Luftwaffe Air & Ground Crew 1939-45 (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
This is a rather small book that cover the range of attire and insignia of Luftwaffe personnel in various climates. Most images are in greyscale with a center section of colour plates. There is a section at the beginning of the book which discusses command organization and designation so if you ever wondered what BdFlGr was, it tells you that it is Bordfleigergruppe or shipboard floatplanes. This book is rife with such terminology in association with specific items of clothing as well. This book seems to be written for those interested in depth minute detail of historical significance. One could conceivably go on for hours discussing the advantages of two or three strap oxygen mask attachments by reading this book. Of particular note though is the use of this book to plan accurate diorama settings for scale military modelling.
