Review

I've discovered the book after being fascinated with the film version of the novel done in the 70s. This book does not disappoint, in a backwards town that only seems to go down we see the perseverance of travesty dancer who with his daughter ( a product of a bet ) manage to entertain people in their rundown prostitute house. Just the fact of make a homosexual character center of a Latinamerican novel was something big and controversial back then. We can't help to feel sympathy for this tragic character that shows the two sides of society and how this forgotten town is a reflection of a macho culture that feedback on itself.

Boring book, boring characters. Full of colloquial incomprehensible Spanish from Chile that is not in the Spanish dictionary. The footnotes/glossary were worthless. A complete waste of time and money. If this book was the author's finest work, I would hate to see what other garbage he wrote.
