3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Place To Start, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Lugers at Random (Hardcover)
This is a must have for Luger collectors, however as you come across other books about Lugers you will realize this one is going to move to the back of the shelf. With writers and researchers like Jan C. Still, Eugene Bender, Sam Costanzo and of course Ralph Shattuck, Luger history is changing yearly. Old classics like "Lugers At Random" and "Luger Variations" are becoming obsolete, mainly because the information is outdated or in some cases just wrong (most errors are found in the old editions of Luger Variations).

Lugers At Random is a great place to start. It describes the basic differences in models and types and shows side by side photographs to help clarify them. It has disassembled guns with individual part names and a brief section on Proof Marks (6 pages). Then it goes right into photographs of Luger pistols. The Accessories chapter of the book is thin compared to what is available for the Luger. Same with the Proof Marks. Also there is no history of the Luger in the book. Of course that is not what this book is designed for, it is desigened to help be a reference to identify a gun, not learn it's history. Also the title sums it up pretty good, lugers at random. There is not much order to this book at least not to a beginner. Once you have learned your Lugers, the ordering makes sense.

When you really want to know your Luger here are some books you may want to consider. For history, try "The Luger Story" by John Walter. Eugene Bender has an excellent book, "Luger Holsters And Accessories Of The 20th Century," to help learn the accoutrements for the Luger. "World Of Lugers Proof Marks" by Sam Costanzo is a must have along with all four books by Jan C. Still.

Charles Kenyon Jr., the writer of Lugers At Ramdom, also has some other great books. "Luger Tips" a paperback is nice to have and "Luger: The Multi-National Pistol" is another must have. With COLOR photographs of pristine guns, cased sets and accessories, this will be the nicest book in your collection.

One more thing about Lugers, the books are as collectible as the guns.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Lugers at Random (Hardcover)
This is the basic book of every Luger collector. You cannot have a collection or even one Luger and not appreciate something the book has to offer. A must have.
