I read Black's commentary in preparation for a Bible class I was teaching on the Gospel of Luke. I found his work to be easy to read yet up to date and containing many wonderful insights. In addition to the commentary on the text itself, the book also includes a number of "supplemental studies" giving deeper insight into topics raised by modern readers of Luke. Such topics include: Anti-Semitism, Baptism, Destruction of Jerusalem and End of Time, Pharisees, Son of Man, and many more. A good deal of information is also contained in footnotes which point the reader to other resources.

I would highly recommend this work to help the individual or teacher who wants to gain a better understanding of Luke's Gospel. It is particularly well suited for the teacher with limited preparation time who needs a well thought out commentary that can be quickly read.

This book is a part of the College Press NIV Commentary series, an excellent series notable for the quality of the writing as well as the remarkable consistency of writing and format between the various authors. The books in this series are a good resource for preparing a Bible class or small group lesson, preparing a sermon, or for personal Bible study.

The book has an introduction and bibliography for further study. Each letter has its own outline. The commentary text is in the traditional verse by verse format. All comments are based on the NIV text which is included in sections. And even though it is based on the NIV, that does not effect the books usefulness for someone using another version. There are footnotes for further explanation of certain ideas, and important Greek words are explained in the text. The Greek words are shown both in the Greek alphabet and spelled phonetically. This is especially helpful those of us who never studied Greek.

As Byron Fike noted in his earlier review, there are a number of supplemental studies scattered throughout the book. There are 23 of these in all and they are listed in a table at the beginning of the book.

The publisher, College Press, also published the Bible Study Textbook series which is now out of print and can be downloaded for free from the publisher's website in pdf form
