it's not often one can tell from the first song that a release is amazing. usually if that first song is incredible the rest of the album is a disappointment, never quite living up to the promise of perfection. that is not the case here. though i haven't finished listening to all three of these discs, i can tell you the first disc alone is worth the price of admission.

luke haines is a grumpy, pessimistic man whose bleak worldview permeates everything he does. at the same time, he has an innate pop sensibility that makes each of these depressing stories listenable, even enjoyable. i haven't found a bad song yet, and i can't imagine someone with this much talent coming up short.
