Skinny, shy third-grader Luke cannot hide from Arthur, his personal bully, until it is time to pick roles for the class play.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Luke is so shy and unsure of himself that he likes to hide behind his hair. He admires his friend Jane, who is full of fun and always in trouble, but he hates Arthur, who sits next to him in school and is always picking on him. Luke's greatest fear is getting a speaking part in the third-grade Thanksgiving play. When lots are drawn for the parts, Luke discovers he can bargain with Arthur, trading his part as the horse for Arthur's part in the crew backstage. With the help of an understanding mother, Luke discovers that Arthur isn't so bad after all and they become friends. Winthrop's theme is well integrated into the plot, and her character development is solid. Stories about school experiences are always popular, and this one should have appeal for those just starting chapter books but who are not quite ready for Johanna Hurwitz's "Aldo Applesauce" (Morrow) or Suzy Kline's "Herbie Jones" (Putnam). --Jeanne Bracken, Farmingdale Public Library, NY
