A dog can teach us so much, they are capable of the unconditional love and devotion that humans find hard to give and even harder to receive. Initially, the title of this book caught my attention, Luke's tale: A Story of Unconditional Love. It was not until I read the blurb that I realized the story was going to be one that was right up my alley. I love stories about animals, especially those told from the animals point of view. Carol McKibben has a unique how it for speaking for our four-legged friends.

Luke is an adorable golden retriever, who loves his humans without reservation. He tells us there are tale of woe and carries us along on his journey to bring them back to wholeness. This is the story of a broken family, like so many others, and yet unlike them. Ashuldt to my mind is the typical male today, when everything's going well, he is a great partner, but the moment, tragedy strikes, he sticks his head in the sand, and cannot handle the emotionalism involved. Sarah's choice to leave when she found out she had breast cancer was brave and motivated by her love for him and her understanding of his limitations.

Reading this book, I found that Luke made more sense than his humans. Carol writes Luke's thought's in such a manner that we feel and understand Sarah's reluctance to add her growing illness to the number of issues that her partner has to deal with. We also can see how difficult a time Ashludnt has had accepting his brother's death and we feel for him. We empathize with him and understand that he blames himself for the tragedy, added to that is the glaring malpractice suit that threatens to destroy his life and career.

What you have here is a story that will touch your heart, a story courage , forgiveness, and most of all unconditional love.

Having gone through breast cancer I can relate to Sara and her journey back to good health. I too have had many therapy dogs and cried a good cry for all the good work Luke did at the hospital. What a moving story of love, courage, forgivness and unconditional love. This lady is truly a heart felt writter and I can't wait to read her next story. Their dog Luke is God's gift to both Sara and Ashlundt and their son Colson.

Title: Luke's Tale - A Story of Unconditional Love
Author: Carol McKibben
Publisher: Troll River Publications
ISBN: 978-1-9395-6402-3

"Real love means caring about another without the thought of what we might get for ourselves. Real love is when we don't put conditions on people in order to love them. It's not real love when other people like us for doing what they want us to do," Sara explains in Carol McKibben's novel, "Luke's Tale - A Story of Unconditional Love."

This one hundred and seventy-three page tome has a photograph of the back end of a large dog's body walking on sand on the front cover. With mild profanity, the book is targeted toward both men and women who have a love for dogs and how they blend into a family unit as it discusses cancer, death, blindness and psychology. Unfortunately, many punctuation and page flushing errors distract from the reading.

Written from a dog's point of view, Luke is a young golden Labrador Retriever who is owned and deeply loved by Ashlundt, a psychologist, and Sara, a twenty-three year old student working on her doctorate in psychology, as they live in the suburbs of Los Angeles.

The first chapter begins in three years into the future where blind Luke is grieving at a hospital but the reader is unaware what is happening, who is hurt or why he is there. This part of the story is later played out about two thirds through the book.

Reverting to the past, one day Sara abruptly announces to Ash that she is leaving to study abroad for a while, leaving him in care of their canine companion. Moody, angry and prone to temper-tantrums, Ash practically ignores the dog as he wallows in self-pity, selfishness and rage as he tries frantically to track her down.

This book combines a wonderful romantic story with a remarkable inspirational story that is sure to touch anybody's heart. The main character of the story is a special dog called Luke who is blessed with extraordinary powers. He understands human conversations and interprets their behavior far better than many of us - especially those of his owners, Ashlundt Jaynes and Sara Colson.

Ashlundt is a psychologist whose life, he feels, has become futile when he is entrapped in a malpractice suit involving the suicide of a patient.

On the other hand, Sara discovers she has breast cancer and has little hope in life. She decides to face this dreadful situation alone, not even wanting to tell her husband about it. And so their lives begin to move apart, each lost in their own misfortunes.

During this difficult time in their lives, Luke acts a common bond.

The author tells a very moving story, revealing many of the emotions felt by not only the owners, but Luke himself and his endless efforts in bringing his owners back together.

The story is full of unconditional love, forgiveness, courage and emotions that a pet can have for humans. The beauty of story lies in its description from Luke's point of view.

Though I am not a person who is easily, this story really brought tears to my eyes. I suspect it will have the same effect on nearly everyone who reads this book. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are a pet lover.
