Don't let the # of tracks fool you, this CD is great,

This is a great CD, showing completely different sides of the Pumpkins in each song. Rhinocerous, which should be a classic to any pumpkin fan, showing the mellow rock. Slunk, which unleashes the anger & harshness of songs like pissant and tales of a scorched earth. and Bye June, which is a simple, yet great tune that gives the empty, and sad feeling with just Billy & his acoustic. This CD has it all, and is a must for any kind of Pumpkin fan

Essential for some, unnecessary for others,

True pumpkins fans should bear in mind that two of the four tracks can be obtained elsewhere, however, the remaining two are early pumpkins gold. To those who are only occasional fans and mostly favor the more conemporary stuff anyway, this is not really for you. Personally this music just takes me back to a different time and those two extra little tracks are essential.

This is kind of a nostalgic little EP for us Generation Xers. It's Gish-era material and B-sides that would do any Pumpkins fan proud. After "Lull," the Smashing Pumpkins upped the ante and ran away with their success, making these simple songs that much more of a treasure. Gish's "Rhinocerous" mixes a dreamy start to buzzsaw guitars that later take over, almost nullifying the heartfelt but sappy lyrics. The short "Blue" starts with quiet wind chimes and a belching bass, which gives way to thumping drums, quiet interludes and a bizarre bridge that peters out. "Blue" foreshadows some of the future pop the Pumpkins would delve into, whereas "Slunk" contains wild guitars and snotty lyrics, properly leading off this era of music, stuff that rivaled even Nirvana's. Finally, "Bye June" is as tender as "Slunk" is rambunctious. The song features spacey lyrics and an acoustic guitar, nothing more. It's pure magic from a band just beginning to tap into its abandonment and potential. Unfortunately, because of its length, "Lull" is nothing spectacular. The songs are good, a few borderline great, but my understanding is that this band had many more great unreleased tunes from 1989. Now that's scary.

Pleasently Surprised,

I brought the Lull EP in an obscure little bookstore in London. It was raining like mad and i was unhappy and depressed. I was skimming through the bargain bin and liked the cover atrwork, so i asked the man at the front desk if i could have a listen...i listened to "Bye June" first and fell head over heels in love...i had never heard of the smashing pumpkins and went out and got "Gish" and "Siamese Dream" when i returned to the states. "Siamese Dream" is now my all-time favorite album but i was a little dissappointed by "Gish". Don't let the number of tracks fool you, "Lull" is great!

Once again the Smashing Pumpkins sell themselves short,

In my opinion, the Smashing Pumpkins are the greatest band to ever exist. The combination of the music, the lyrics, and the very unique vocal style of Corgan make the band the most original act to come out of the nineties, and they overshadow their influences. This is just another release that could have been more. If they wanted to put out unreleased songs they could've added :spiteface, jennifer ever, nothing and everything, under your spell, egg, mother, my dahlia, sun, love(1989), c'mon, with you, stars falling, daughter, jesus loves his babies, etc. etc...the idea of leaving these songs unreleased is to me like whole books missing out of a bible would be to a christian, ITS JUST A CRYIN SHAME...but get the cd anyway, slunk just totally RULES RULES RULES! the greatest band ever.

Debut,

a 4 song EP - there are two songs from their official debut album "Gish" and two never published on other album.Early Pumpkins were playing a melodic Grunge rock - much more optimistic than Nirvana or soundgarden but not as heavy as Pearl jam - they had their own style.and Billy Corgan's vocals are one of the essential nineties voices. this is good only for more advanced SP fans, although many rock fans will surely apreciate the beauty of this short album. anyway get "Gish" - their full lenght amazing official album.

this is a splendid little set of songs. i got it for 5 dollars at tower, and it's just plain fun. Sure, your only getting two unreleased songs, since Blue was on Pisces Iscariot, but the rocking, "Slunk," and the acoustic strum of, "Bye June," make this EP completely worth the small investment

Lull an EP just really of the material that did not make it on to gish. However, the album is not just not something to disregard. The four songs on here are still good in their own right. It really seems that these songs should have been added onto gish in the first placed to make the album more complete.

This is an excellent collection of songs.I highly recomend it for the song "Slunk". "Bye June" is great too. "Rhinoceros" one should know from Gish. And "Blue" from Pices Iscariot. A smart buy for your Pumpkin fan.

Great EP,
This review is from: Lull (Audio CD)
Actually this EP is the "Rhinoceros" single and it is very good. It starts with the title song (same version as on _Gish_), follows with the superb "Blue" (which is also on the _Pisces Iscariot_ compilation) and the energetic "Slunk", closing with the bittersweet acoustic song "Bye June". This is a must have for any serious Pumpkins fan.
