For All You Dear Hearts and Gentle People,
By Joey Latunski (Simi Valley, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lulled By the Moonlight (Audio CD)
This CD is the perfect complement to any of Mickey's previous releases. Although not a part of the 8 CD "Collection" it compares equal or better than your favorite Newbury album. LBTM takes you on a stroll down dream lane and lets you drift off. "Three Bells For Stephen", "Amen For Old Friends" and "Shades of '63" take you back and rewards you with memories of years gone by. "Captured In Blue" is perhaps one of the most sentimental wedding songs ever written. The master lives on!

MICKEY HITS ANOTHER HOME RUN,

In ny opinion, the two greatest and under-appreciated singer-songwriters of the past forty years are Gene Clark and Mickey Newbury. Gene's been dead for 10 years, but just in the last few years his music has been starting to get the attention it deserves. Mickey, God bless him, is still alive and doing just fine, as this CD attests. It is one of his best, and that is saying a lot. The songwriting is superb, the music is perfect, and Mickey's in great voice. Mickey's unique blend of country/folk/jazz/rock is beyond my powers of description - like Gene, he is able to write songs that are profound, moving, and musically lovely. Although his songs have been covered by a multitude of other artists, he has never been given a tiny fraction of the attention he deserves as a performing musician. His own versions of his songs are often the best. Highly recommended.

Something old, Something new,
This review is from: Lulled By the Moonlight (Audio CD)
Love never dies. Like a diamond, different facets show different colored lights at different times. Mickey renews old songs, brings us some new songs, there is one borrowed, and one captured in blue. You're sitting with an old guy who is looking back on his life, maybe you're at a wedding, maybe just a bar.Generations of love and dreams are gathered in a room. We get a sample of every heartbeat & story there. This is my favorite Newbury recording. One word? Exquisite. From the 1st tune to the last. Over the years, as friends and family have moved away or passed on (like Mickey), I can always find comfort in this recording. One or two songs, or on a rainy night, the whole thing. Listen closely to the arrangements, the musicians, the lyrics, and most of all, to what I have always called "God's own cello", the voice of Mickey Newbury, at its best. RIP, Mickey!

This is an absolutely gorgeous CD. The musicians who accompany Newbury are wonderful, also. This CD contains two of the hard-to-find songs "What Will I Do (in the Dead of the Night)" and "Ramblin' Blues" as well as 15 others, most of which are not included in his box set. Also contains some nice instrumental interludes. Highly recommended.
