Phaeton is Great!, December 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lully - Phaëton / Crook, Smith, Yakar, Gens, Théruel, Fouchécourt, Naouri, Huttenlocher, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Minkowski (Audio CD)
This is a great opera. I think Phaeton is Lully's best opera. This one is exciting and fresh. The music and singing are very good. There are many memorable moments in Phaeton. Track 23 of disc 1 and track 24 of disc 2 prove that Lully is the baroque master. Baroque doesn't get any more powerful than those tracks! The opera's last track will have you remember the name Lully. The music is quite fitting for the time of King Louis XIV.

Sonorous tranport to the Versailles of Louis XIV, September 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lully - Phaëton / Crook, Smith, Yakar, Gens, Théruel, Fouchécourt, Naouri, Huttenlocher, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Minkowski (Audio CD)
A musically balanced realisation of a classic Baroque opera on modern instruments. Lack of a visual focus always makes some of the interlude music seem superfluous. Notes in English and German expain the background to the work and the composer . There is a translation of the libretti in English and German, the French text is printed in antique script in (old) French.
