Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-Cousins Lulu and Mellie are best friends. In this modern-day, seaside adventure, the girls are vacationing with Lulu's parents and their beloved old dog, Sam. Having rented a cottage from a persnickety owner, the family hopes for the perfect week full of reading, kite-building, and marathon-training. However, a wayward stray bounds into their lives and turns their plans upside down (along with a few trash cans along the way). McKay hits the nail on the head in this beginning chapter book. Children will delight in the story of how this thieving menace turns into a brave hero and loyal friend, wiggling its way into the hearts of the characters and readers alike. This book is just right for youngsters ready for chapters, with cheerful black-and-white illustrations on almost every other page. Younger children will also enjoy this story as a read-aloud. The plot is universal and the vocabulary hints of a European setting. Family members sticking together to overcome obstacles is the prevalent theme and the happy ending is hoped for, if not expected. This title should be a staple in any early-chapter-book collection.-Amy Shepherd, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Middleton, DEα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

While Lulu, her parents, cousin Mellie, and Sam the dog are enjoying a vacation in a seaside cottage, the girls slowly befriend the dog from the sea, a lonely, energetic stray living in the dunes. Lulu’s parents warn her that adopting him is not even slightly possible, but she continues to hope for exactly that, and inevitably, readers will too. Fresh as a sea breeze, the story shows McKay’s sure hand in creating characters, both human and canine. A rewarding addition to the Lulu series of beginning chapter books. Appealing grayscale illustrations appear throughout the book. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

Lulu and Mellie aren't just friends, they are best friends. Lulu's love for her menagerie of just about a dozen pets is once again very evident in this story about her family's trip to the ocean. This book isn't just sweet, it's super sweet! Lulu is just as cute and funny as ever in this latest offering in the Lulu series. While Lulu's mother wants to get plenty of reading done during their vacation, and Mellie's big project is to finish a homemade kite, Lulu decides to tackle the challenge of taming a stray dog who has been wrecking havoc at the seaside resort.

This book is unique in that large portions of the omniscient third-person narrative describe the thoughts and feelings of the dog from the sea. Large type and a generous amount of black and white illustrations make for a very easy, approachable read. There's a very dramatic ending too, sure to satisfy any dog-lover.

Lulu and the Dog from the Sea is a children's book by Hilary McKay. My daughter and I read this together and we were rooting for the Dog from the Sea from the moment we learned his story. The Dog from the Sea was scared, hungry, thirsty and misunderstood. He did everything he could to stay alive and away from the dog catchers. As a result, people hated him and feared him - until Lulu, her friend, and her family came along.

This is a story of friendship, unconditional love, trust and hope. I definitely give this book 5 of 5 stars.

I received this book from the author via netgalley - ebook. All opinions are mine.

Great story, my 6 year old loved it. Thought the curmudgeonly landlord could have been toned down a little bit though.

Lulu and her family soon discover that the stray dog from the sea, who has been living at the beach by the sand dunes, is a thief and a menace, while staying in a 4 room cottage off a bumpy, potholed road. Lulu decides on her vacation to tame the dog and make friends with him because the dog seems lonely. Melanie is Lulu's 7 year old cousin and they are best friends although they have different hobbies since Melanie likes to make kites and Lulu loves dozens of animals immensely. While Lulu's mother reads her book and the dad smuggles rocks, a problem arises when Melanie falls with a hurt ankle and the dog who was abandoned as a pup, that the whole town wants to catch, is now chasing bubbles and a frisbee. You'll love the conclusion of this adventurous story, especially if you love animals! Very nice illustrations compliment the book.

This is a really sweet story about a girl that believes she can make a difference in a dog's life. Her family is beautiful. They provided an interesting dynamic and quite a bit of humor throughout the story.

The writing is simple, just right for children making their way into chapter books. There are quite a few illustrations in the book, but not on every page. The artwork is cute and fits the mood of the story really well. For an early chapter book, I was really impressed.

If you plan on giving this book to your child to read, PLEASE make sure to talk to them about dealing safely with strange animals. You would hate to have your child find out the hard way that not all dogs are friendly.
