The Clear Ice Difference

The IM200SS produces up to 28 pounds of crystal-clear, restaurant-quality ice every 24 hours using the same modern technology found in commercial ice machines. Clear ice not only looks better, but also melts up to 5 times slower than cloudy ice. Clear ice also tends to have a firmer texture, and most importantly, tastes better than cloudy ice.

Most portable ice makers produce cloudy ice that melts quickly and looks murky. Don't your drinks deserve better? The Luma Comfort IM200SS is one of the only portable ice makers available that actually creates clear ice - just like you'd find at a restaurant or bar. That makes the Luma Comfort clear ice maker perfect for making both fancy cocktails and cool summertime beverages.

Additional Features of the IM200SS Stainless Steel Clear Ice Maker

The Luma Comfort IM200SS features a display panel with low water and full ice indicators, along with a space-saving countertop design. No plumbing is required: just fill the IM200SS with water, turn it on and enjoy clear ice in minutes. The IM200SS also comes with a removable ice bin and a handy ice scoop.

Dimensions of the unit: 11.3” x 14.8” x 14.1” Weight: 25.5 lbs. Power: 110V / 60 Hz / 130W.

We do a lot of entertaining, especially during football season, and we had grown tired of spending money buying ice at the grocery store or some random gas station. I figured this Luma unit was worth the small investment - provided it did make clear ice as advertised. So far so good! Personally, I really like that this unit makes actual ice CUBES, versus bullet ice.

Pros:
- This unit really does make clear ice, almost exactly like what you'd find in a bar
- Very simple to use, this ice maker is the epitome of "plug & play"
- Looks awesome in our kitchen, the stainless finish is just about perfect
- Makes a lot of ice once it gets running
- Ice is cubed, not bullet or circles - probably my favorite part!

Cons:
- The first time you use the unit, the ice making cycle takes a little longer than advertised. Once the unit really gets humming, the ice comes faster and faster
- While it makes a lot of ice, it will melt if you don't move it to the freezer (after about 2-3 hours), although the water is then re-used
- It's a bit heavy to be a truly portable unit, unless you're putting it in an RV

Tips:
- When you first get your ice maker and unpack it, make sure you let it sit for a couple hours before plugging it in, just like you would a fridge
- The first cycle or two takes a little more time than normal, so make sure you give yourself extra time if you need ice for something in particular
- If you want to build up a nice ice stockpile, get some plastic bags and fill them with ice from the machine, then put it in a freezer for long term storage - MUCH cheaper than buying it from the store.

After looking at portable units for clear ice, I finally crossed my fingers and ordered this unit based on plenty of reviews and the fact that they're all made in china....

Clean it thoroughly, and run plenty of ice before you make ice you're going to actually use. It has a strong 'made in china chemical smell' when you first unbox it. Reminds me of the little made in china dremel I got one year that actually stated you should wash your hands after handling it due to chemicals used in manufacturing.... When I say clean thoroughly, I mean getting your hands inside the water receptical to wipe it all out, etc. Q-tips worked for cleaning the freezing grid. Then make ice constantly for a day, I didn't run soapy water through the plumbing, by the second day it was fine to put in a drink.

The pros: It makes clear ice, which looks great in your drink! (this is from water from the tap through a brita filter). For bigger cubes, hold down the power button and count to 10 when you turn it on. When it gets going , it drops a waffle of ice every 15 to 20 minutes. Comparing fridge ice maker ice (a new kenmore), ice from trays (brita water) and ice from the store, this ice tastes best. Odd that it tastes better than the brita tray water, but it does....

It also cranks out the ice fast enough that it's easy to make enough ice for two days in a evening (we go through ALOT of ice). I havn't done the math to see if it makes 28 pounds/day, I could care less if it meets the families requirements. Another thing that's nice is that the cubes are small enough to go into the ice maker bin in the door of the fridge and pass through the door dispenser, so clear ice from the freezer door. Very convenient and no wasted space by a sub-par freezer ice maker.

This product has a pretty serious design flaw. I have seen other people mention leaking problems. Sure enough, mine was leaking instantly once I started it up... dripping from the right edge about half way back.

I tracked down the issue, and you can fix this if you are just a little creative.

What is comes down to is this: If you look into the lower tank (take out the ice bucket) you will see the drain where water is recycled back to the top to be used again for making ice. That drain has a washer *with almost no pressure applied to it.* In fact it is just a friction fit. Pretty dumb. This could be easily remedied by having a threaded back side and a plastic nut so the washer would compress a little. With all the returns they are dealing with it would be a much more cost-effective solution....but I digress.

Anyway, what I did was to slice a synthetic wine cork in half (long ways). Squeeze the cork into the little indentation at the bottom of the reservoir. This puts pressure against the washer but still allows water to move. If you try this, it is at your own risk. Certainly *do not* use a regular wine cork because you will certainly get cork into your water lines. A synthetic cork, sliced cleanly, should be fine, but again... your risk.

For now... the leak is solved.

On another note, the blue "Ice Full" light was not turning off for me (which means the unit will not make any ice). I investigated the plastic lever that should turn that light (and the ice process) on and off. On the right side of the lever there is a cylindrical housing that probably holds a metal slug or a magnet... something that completes a connection so the circuit board knows the ice bucket is full. Well, my housing was empty.
