I found them to be easy to snap, but they seem to be constructed with many internal "segments", each of which must be snapped for the entire length to glow. I've found that the best way to do it is to hold one end between thumb and forefinger, and with the thumb and forefinger of the other hand, starting at the same end, bend/snap gradually along the length to the other end. Think of squeezing toothpaste from a nearly empty tube, which curls as you squeeze.
BUT! As some of the other reviews have said, be careful to neither bend the tube too sharply while doing this, nor to squeeze too hard. The tube is prone to cracking at the end and leaking if you do.
Hence, I would be cautious giving one of these to a small child to do for themselves, and I'd probably supervise rambunctious older children too.
At this price, it's a fair gimmick for a party or doling out an occasional nighttime treat for a child. Just have realistic expectations about what 12 cents apiece buys you. :-) And supervise smaller children carefully with them.
I purchased 1000 of these and approximately 25% of the glow sticks were duds (or did not light up at all) out of the entire batch. That is about $20-30 wasted on GLOW sticks that did not glow. If you have dont mind spending your money on 75 glows sticks instead of 100 then go ahead and purchase this brand.
Probably 2% of the batch actually broke spilling the liquid (or whatever chemical it is) on clothes and furniture. These glow sticks were also difficult to keep on connected as many times the connectors broke or just slipped off the glow stick.
Overall, its not a terrible deal for the glow sticks but personally I would rather pay a little more for glow sticks that I know will light up, wont break, and will not fall off. LumiStick is not that brand.
Anyway, yesterday afternoon I got them out to show my son who is excited about his birthday coming up this weekend. The first one that I pulled out seemed fairly dim after I activated it. When I bent it around my own wrist it burst open spewing it's dim glow-in-the-dark substance all over my shirt. I rinsed the shirt out with cold water and threw it into the washer on soak cycle, and, thankfully, the stuff came out with no lasting stain on the shirt.
I thought that the first stick was just a bad one so I activated another one and wrapped it around my son's wrist. Twenty minutes later I heard him scream from another room in the house. According to my son, he had taken off the bracelet and put then put it back on, on, off, on off a couple of times. Then it exploded all over the couch and carpet, just like the first one had done all over my shirt. Again, thankfully, I was able to clean up the mess with only some cold water and scrubbing of the upholstery and carpet.
However, I told my son that we can not give these out to his party guests. We are two for two with bad sticks. I can't risk that they won't burst open and splash some kid in the eye with the normal wear and tear they are going to receive from rowdy third graders.
Were they ruined by the two weeks sitting on the floor? I don't know. Even if that's what happened, they score a zero in my book for durability.
These things are absolutely worthless. Listen to the other reviewers. If I could give them 0 stars, I would.
Avoid the Lumistick brand at all costs.
