4.0 out of 5 stars So close, and yet so far..., February 28, 2011

I bought this butter dish so that I could use 1-lb blocks of butter. It's the largest I could find. It's huge. It's heavy.

And it still doesn't accommodate a pound of butter.

I end up having to soften the butter on the counter, then slice off about 1/4 inch from the long side to make it fit. The quest continues. So, for those who are looking for a dish for a pound block of butter... This isn't *quite* it. Alas and Alack.

If, however, you are not using butter a pound at a time, this is a very large butter dish, and extremely well made. It'll hold 2 sticks with no problem at all - 3, if you're on the West Coast of the US and your sticks are of the shorter, fatter variety.

I found my 4 ounce (1 stick) size butter dish was not large enough for an 8 ounce double stick size butter product I am now buying. This dish is perfect for an 8 ounce size and while I haven't tried it, it should be large enough for a 1 pound package of butter.

Pros
Glass: The glass is thick and heavy which I like as the lid does not knock off the bottom dish easily when moving items around in the frig or when moving the butter dish. Also being so thick is should be less likely to break. It is fully tempered which should mean that if it is subject to temperature change it shouldn't easily crack and if dropped it shouldn't shatter into small pieces. Not that I drop dishes a lot, but with tile floors if I do there will be no tiny glass shards to find with a magnifying glass in the grout!

Style: The lid has a double use as it can serve as a chiller! I buy organic grass fed cow butter which is not inexpensive so I like to keep it fresh and to preserve nutrient content. I fill the lid with crushed ice and sit it under the dish that holds the butter. This keeps the butter fresh over an extended buffet or holiday meal and I can leave the butter out on hot Arizona summer days so guests can use it without having to look in the frig. In fact, I'm buying another one so I'll have two lids, one to use as a chiller and the other for a lid.

Cons
Not that the company making the dish should have made the lid smaller, but it's nice for you to know that the lid is wide and heavy. I have a very large hand and picking up the butter dish lid off the butter is a bit difficult. Anyone with a smaller hand would have to use two hands and if I have any butter on the lid or moist hands I need to use two as well. Perhaps they could have made a ridge around the top edge to grasp. No complaints thought and it still deserves 5 stars.

I posted a few pictures for you to see. The picture provided by the company makes the top look less deep and the bottom look more deep than they actually are.

This butter dish is almost exactly what I was looking for ... a container large enough to hold a stick of butter PLUS the butter knife! The short butter knife sticks out the edge a bit, but much better than anything I've found so far! I use mine upside down (like the photo) with what's supposed to be the base on top and the large lid on the bottom to hold the butter and the knife. I haven't given up hope finding the PERFECT butter dish, but in the mean time, this works just fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great refrigerator dish, April 27, 2011

I have had one of these dishes for years, and ordered two more. They are so durable - for two sticks of butter that the cat cannot get into at the table, for a block of cream cheese with crackers on the buffet, for storing small amounts of leftovers in the fridge..... It can be used with either part as the bottom or top, so very versatile. Plus, the glass is tempered, so it is not only chip and break resistant, but also will not create sharp shards of glass should it actually be broken. This item is manufactured in France, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to use healthy glass dishes that cannot absorb odors or leach chemicals into the foods stored in them!!

Good butter dish, glass is thick and sturdy. I will buy another one soon. I'll use the top part for holding my salt and pepper grinders, and use the bottom half for holding my kitchen sponge.

Simple, clean design. You can see the butter as you use it. Grew up with this design and I guess I am used to it, but the ceramic ones just seem stupid compared to this. You can clean it easily and it is basically shatter proof. Great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Large enough for two sticks!!!, September 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Luminarc 42644 butter dish. (Kitchen)
This butter dish is large enough to hold two sticks of butter, which is great for larger families! The only thing I would change would be to put some sort of handle/knob on the top, to make it easier to get the lid off. However, I would still purchase this item again. It is of simple design, so it looks nice sitting on the counter.

it's very hard to find a butter dish this size and i was very happy to own this one. it has just the right measurements for european size irish butter (our american butter dishes are made for our thin sticks of butter) and it's dishwasher safe. looks nice, too.
