I have several books on art quilting, and they all have their good points, but this book covers so much, I couldn't believe it. It includes, design, color theory, construction, fabric painting, special effects, material lists, and so on. The only thing it doesn't really cover is the use of printed commercial fabrics( there are other books out there for that). I was impressed by the clear instructions and photographs. It even has step-by- step projects in the back of the book and a large pull-out pattern sheet. This book has been an excellent addition to my quilt book how-to/reference library. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Luminous Landscapes to anyone who is looking for a concise, clearly illustrated book on quilt making with an artistic flair. Great price too!

This book is one of the best I've seen. There are some well written and well-organised sections dealing with the principles of composition, colour and stitching techniques. Gloria usually starts her landscapes with a painted background, so she gives a short well-illustrated section on fabric painting. Most of that stuff is available elsewhere, but it is assembled and illustrated particularly well.

The second half of the book contains details of her construction methods. One of those is using freezer paper on the right side of the fabric for appliqued shapes. The second - her signature style - is pieced sections on point, blended into the applique design. She gives clear diagrams

and inspiring examples of this technique. She then gives some examples of how to achieve different effects for trees, water and reflections. There is a gallery of student work, and two fully illustrated projects with paper patterns included at the back.

In my view this is excellent value, a perfect blend of practical tips and inspiration.

If you love Gloria's quilts you will love this book. I have done two workshops with Gloria and it is very useful to have this book to put everything she covered in the workshops and more as a permanent resource. It is very detailed so is wonderful for people who have not had the opportunity to attend a workshop.

Just as the title describes, this book is filled with luminous, georgous quilts and every secret you need to know on how to make your own. Gloria has given detailed instructions and methods on how to create every aspect of landscapes, backgrounds, forgrounds, sky, oceans, animals along with details on how to combine fabrics, apply paint and she has even included patterns. This book is easy to understand and recommended for beginners or advanced quilters wanting to take their creative abilities to a new level.

Even if your library of reference books is bulging at the seams, you want this book! Gloria Loughman treats her readers like treasured friends. She invites us to join her in creating beautiful art by sharing more practical advice than any three other books put together. Beginning with the design phase, she moves neatly through each process step-by-step, organizing brilliantly so that a reader can easily find the kind of technique she or he wants.

There are abundant close-ups so that a person can see easily how the finished technique will look...and what to avoid.

I would have purchased this book as a reference for the techniques alone, but I was doubly blessed by the variety of finished quilts which is truly inspiring, suggesting possibilities without suggesting that there is only one way to handle any given idea. In other words, although Loughman might have chosen applique for a particular section of quilt, I might decide that paint or piecing would create the effect I want better. (This can be seen in the 2 pp spread of student work which appears at the end of the book.)

A book worth every penny.

I've been producing art and landscape quilts for years, always hoping to improve my work and expand my knowledge. I hoped to learn the meanings of some of the still unknown terms; learn new techniques for the many tools and support materials that are used in producing quality art quilts-what paint and how best to apply it, what tool to use for each effect, how to prepare the fabric for one type, versus another, what foundation fabric, which is the best stabilizer to use for one technique versus another, what is the best fusing material for what fabric, what layer or how it is best to use for various effects, etc. Always hoping for that ONE BOOK that would clearly explain the terms often used in them, with actual examples of "what it is and how it is used"- I ordered "Luminous Landscapes!" I could not put this book down! The author's insight as to the details that we might need to know in order to produce quality work is astonishing. She teaches us better, faster and easier ways to make great art/landscape quilts, even if we've been creating them for years!

Gloria Loughman's book, "Luminous Landscapes: Quilted Visions in Paint and Thread" was a pleasure to read and easy to understand. She explains techniques with good details-for those of us who need the extra visuals, and she introduces many new and innovative ideas and various creative uses for the most recently introduced materials on the market. I am thrilled with this most helpful book and in the few months I have owned it, have produced my best art quilts yet! I highly recommend this book!

This is an excellent book with clear directions and applications. This book follows a step-by-step guide with pictures and list of materials one would need for an artistic endeavor that involves not only quilting but painting. It opens the world of quilting to the world of art and adds dimension.

Luminous Landscapes exceded all my expectations. I was fortunate to attend Gloria's workshop in 2004 in Durban, South Africa and enjoyed every minute. It is wonderful to have the book now to refresh my mind, to give more inspiration and to learn new techniques. The book is very good worth for money and very well and clearly illustrated. Instructions are easy to follow. I can highly recommend it to fellow-quilters.

I like this book because it shows me lots of different ways to make designs on fabrics. I can use them in my own designs. Don`t have to make copys of others designs.

This book provided me with some usable ideas but I find the instructions a little hard to follow. Requires some effort to understand.
