5.0 out of 5 stars Gotan Project's At Its Best
Fundamentally, a return to Revancha del Tango, yet not quite. Lunatico moves forward like a big city-New York or Buenos Aires-exploring new boundaries but remaining true to its cadences and beats.

Even the Rap in "Mi Confesion" seems fitting, faithful in a way to the melancholy of Tango, also particularly present in "Tango Cancion" and the gorgeous "Celos."...

3.0 out of 5 stars Es bueno, pero me gusta mas el primero
Lo escuche muchas veces, y tal vez sea tanta fusión con otros ritmos y generos lo que no me gusta tanto, es un disco bien hecho, con buen concepto, pero prefiero el primero que es mas tanguero y electrónico.

Fundamentally, a return to Revancha del Tango, yet not quite. Lunatico moves forward like a big city-New York or Buenos Aires-exploring new boundaries but remaining true to its cadences and beats.

Even the Rap in "Mi Confesion" seems fitting, faithful in a way to the melancholy of Tango, also particularly present in "Tango Cancion" and the gorgeous "Celos."

Of all the good and not so good Electro-Tango that has come out in recent years, even Supervielle, Federico Auberle or Bajo Fondo, Gotan Project's remains the most substantial work being done today in "renewing" Tango once more.

The writing is inspired, and Gustavo Beytelman through his piano-and arranging and conducting of all strings-is specially stunning. Precise and economic in his solos but not without his tender side. Buenos Aires music at its best.

Another perfect move has been choosing Cristina Villalongo to lend her voice, never dramatic yet bringing precise nuance and character through her singing.

Other tracks to distinguish are "Amor Porteno," a collaboration with the band Calexico, as well as the Electronica take on "La Viguela" and Ry Cooder's "Paris, Texas" transformed into longings right out of Argentina's folklore.

All in all, a tremendous return to form and a whole new expanse of sounds and evocative possibilities for the New Tango.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Music, January 11, 2007

I was so happy that a friend turned me on to Gotan Project a few months before the holidays. I ended up giving Lunatico to several friends and colleagues as gifts for Christmas. They all absolutely love Gotan Project. A really uplifting, energizing and sexy CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heat... by way of the cool., September 12, 2006
This review is from: Lunático (Audio CD)
I bought their first album, La Revancha del Tango, on a whim when my favorite D.C. haunt, Olssons Books & Records, was playing them over the store's speakers. The store's music buyer, Werner, was always good at recommending music from classic blues to "electronica" and Revancha was haunting. It is *still* growing on me. While I was excited to learn about the new album, I was also a bit wary as Revancha was so very, very good. I am glad to say that Lunatico actually bests the first album. I am fond of thinking of music as venues so consider "Amor Porteño" a quietly intense tango bar, "Differente" its wildly exhilarating opposite, "Notas" your private living room's dance floor (you're embarrassed by how it makes you want to move), and "Celos" that first date cafe with the man you've been dreaming of... And kudos to them for their powerfully poignant "Paris, Texas" with its pounding drums and wrenching piano and accordion sounds. HIGHLY recommended.

This album is amazing, beyond my expectations, which were pretty high from there last album anyways, but in comparison to the last album, it's still that awesome classic sound with a electronic twist, but better..oh yes, better...

just buy it, it's worth every penny...

5.0 out of 5 stars The soundtrack to the end of the world, April 12, 2008
This review is from: Lunático (Audio CD)
I've always thought that, late on the night the world ends, we'll be in a dark milonga watching the dancers dance and listening to the weary yet romantic sound of the tango. On that night, they'll definitely be playing some cuts from this album and I think that the last song of the night, before existence simply ceases, will be Gotan Project's version of Ry Cooder's "Paris, Texas" (from the Wim Wenders movie).

After loving "La Revancha del Tango," but getting a little tired of it over the years, I expected to be disappointed by "Lunatico." It's just the opposite. I just listen to it more and more. If you like the tango sound and you like to listen to artists explore new space with it, this album is definitely for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars More promiscuous than your average tango, May 23, 2007
This review is from: Lunático (Audio CD)
Gotan's first collection "La Revancha del Tango" was an irresistibly gut-grabbing, loin-twitching, bass-loping, dub-tango hybrid winner from the first listen, invariably prompting responses of "What it THIS? I LOVE it".

"Lunático" is a much less in-your-face proposition. I could barely wait to get it out of its packaging, but then I struggled to get into the music itself. Mostly less meaty than "La Revancha" and more varied - tricksier, even. It took some chance random plays on the iPod to insinuate a couple of the songs into my ears again. Then I wanted more. Badly. And now I rate it just as more-ish as "La Revancha".

It juxtaposes the sweet, warm-deadpan voice of Cristina Vilallonga on some tracks (Amor Porteno, Diferente, Celos, Arrabal) with the roguish, rough-edged panache of Carlos Caceres describing the birth of the tango (Notas)and Jimi Santos (Domingo) and the tango-rap of Koxmoz (Mi Confesion). There's even a robot-like treated voice intoning the words to La Viguela, giving it a strangely religious quality.

Like "La Revancha", "Lunático" is steeped in a sense of place and culture but it's not Strictly Tango Argentino. The Gotans have tapped into a tango and a Buenos Aires of the imagination, adventurous and promiscuous and modern yet managing to be faithful to its deep roots.

A mysterious, sly, inventive and captivating work of outstanding creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars SF under a groove..new dance music and beyond, August 21, 2006
By
This review is from: Lunático (Audio CD)
Gotan Project is a nice example of good instrumentation in dance music right now. I bought this album because I love a good mix of tango fusion, electronica, and dance. The production is rich and writing is quite good and with interesting melodies from South America with that French touch electronica sound.

I was looking on Amazon for something more underground and I found these records called the "under a groove," series records.

Paris under a groove, and San Francisco under a groove. These are great for the breakbeat, jazz and funk electronica dance collection. These have many cool artists like St Germain, Miguel Migs, Florian, Terrasse Tranquille, Will Felt. etc. Both a great listen. Take care and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars exceptional, April 15, 2006
This review is from: Lunático (Audio CD)
after the whole vibe "spicehouse " has created recentlly i must add that this is the cream of the cream in inovating music. i mean the genre "tango" has always been something of a mistery reserved to "wise old men" sort of say. this album transcends all that for the new generation.

the production here is probablly the best i ever seen. there is only 1 track (celio) that sounds like a fill up( well none is perfct). everything else falls in a perfect loop towards reaching an active meditation.this record will not make you fall asleep but brings a lot of emotions.

overall it has an uptempo chill out beat.what stands out is its mediteranian influences compunded on a tango genere.if u do not this band you could mistaken it as a spanish/italian/south american/african or generally european production.

this is great as well for a romantic encounter.any 2 parties involved in a sentimental relationship will find this easy to "open up" while listening to such sound.

i listen to all this band's albums but i found the previous releases experimental at best.here they have polished themseves and got the groove on . vocals are very sensitive and especially fall on at the right time and with the right accent.the lady has a 1920's vibration wich comes wicked and yet sentimentally calculated on this modern acid jazz vibe with its tango specifics

i cant really pick a favourite song(s) but i will try:
-"diferente"- i really love its message
-"mi confesion" is dep chilling
-"amor porteno" is first track with the purpose of chilling you out before starting a jurney of self discoery
-"arrabal" is the point where you grab the partener and do that innovatve tango dance "a la'" pulp fiction style...
