5.0 out of 5 stars ridiculously ridiculous, October 20, 2008
This review is from: Luna (Audio CD)
the words of comic book guy..."best album - ever." comes to mind...
i get goosebumps telling my friends about this album...i came across a quote from someone that said: " their minds are immeasurably superior than ours" was spot on...while i was/am a huge beta band fan...i think the aliens definitely have taken it to a new level of genius.. if i had to choose stand-out tracks (which would truly be all of 'em), i would say, today, my favorites would be sunlamp show, blue mantle and billy jack...oh, and boats as well...star rating you ask?? well, how many are out there??? billions. that's my rating. thank you aliens!!

Do you want to explore the canyons in your mind? Then listen to this album. On their sophomore effort, The Aliens have taken us to places that we could seldom reach ourselves, without, ahem, help. For lack of a better term "They're out there is space, man". Incredible channeling of early Floyd comes through in such beautiful ways it would make Sid proud. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, February 28, 2009
This review is from: Luna (Audio CD)
From the ashes that were the Beta Band, the Aliens rise on a magic carpet to bring us a great homage to the music of the late '60's. Drawing on influences like Syd Barrett, McCartney, and Bowie, they piece together a masterful album that holds up to anything those three ever put out. I'm totally in awe of this album. Brilliant from beginning to end.

"Dark Side of the Moon" meets "Nothing's Shocking." Sort of. Crazy beautiful raucous sentimental all in one. Refreshing bit of ear travel.

i like this record.
gordon anderson writes oddly good tunes. odd because they often take strange turns. twisty turny like roads or dreams.
on the whole album feels sort of .....soft - spacey - sometimes krauty sometimes rocky, proggy, lush and dreamy and sometimes loud but also sometimes supersoft like feather dusters on your brain and ears - feather dusters that ROCK...propulsively, with synths, gorgeous vocals, a great rhythm section; heartbreakingly pretty melodies. and classic beautiful singing that sometimes reminds me of 70s radio and sometimes just makes my ears feel really great.
and the words: surprisingly sunny, and cryptic, usually poetic. trippy, strange, sweet, often surreal.
my favorite song "blue mantle" on this record is a song sung by someone lost inside a dream; kinda seems like the singer's drowning in the dream but also seems like he's trying to wake up, and failing. it's Astoundingly Hauntingly Harrowingly Beautiful.
I keep trying to place this record alongside other bands--For some reason I think it should connect to Spectrum and Spiritualized's brand of drug rock but really it's different--it's own kind of poppy splintered wild alien music...maybe more like the child of the beach boys beatles alan parsons project and some other weird obscure prog bands from a long long time ago.
the book itself is really totally cool - filled with wonderful artwork - painting, writing, pictures by gordon the lone pigeon (who sings all the songs) and the other aliens - it makes this purchase special, unique, delightful. super idea this. i can't think of another cd that comes in this kind of art-book format. very cool way to showcase their art and writing and vision....

5.0 out of 5 stars Luna should have been album of the year, April 25, 2010

Aliens have landed!!! I only started listening to this album in 2010. Huge album read a few "professional" reviews stating some of the songs were too long - well what can I say - these are musicians for musicians creating music for the shear enjoyment. You can really tell they are enjoying themselves. If you want 3-4 minute cuts stick with plastic Britney - if you want something refreshing and real - give this album a listen. Favorite songs Bobby's Song, Magic Man, Billy Jack, Boats, Blue Mantle.
