Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2AA series designed to be read aloud to younger children or alone by beginning readers. Each title records the life cycle of a specific insect/mollusk. Mating is mentioned, but specifics are not provided. Death never enters the scene. The realistic illustrations are large, colorful, and framed with clear borders in colors that match the main tones of the covers. Visually appealing, the books have accurate (if very elementary) texts that may satisfy some childrens' immediate informational needs and raise a storm of question from others. Although each title has a brief assortment of facts for adults and a glossary of terms italicized in the text, these sections will prove inadequate if more detail is demanded. While ladybugs are often featured in juvenile nonfiction, luna moths are not, and slugs, alas, being somewhat unlovely, give ground to coverage of their "cuter" cousins, the snails. Nicely done, if simplistic.APatricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Beautiful Book!, January 31, 2002
By
John Himmelman weaves his obvious love and knowledge of nature into something far more than just a beautifully illustrated, age appropriate story. His stories and paintings capture the essence of the creatures he portrays, and leaves the reader with intimate understanding and a desire to know more. This is a great book, as are all of Mr. Himmelman's works. I highly recommend this for your budding young naturalists. I commend Mr. Himmelman for setting such high standards in his craft! Keep'm coming.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, April 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Luna Moth's Life (Nature Upclose) (Paperback)
I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PRODUCT AS I EXPECTED TO SEE PHOTOS OF THE LUNA MOTH AND MORE WRITTEN INFORMATION. ALTHOUGH INFORMATIVE AS TO WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS NOT THOROUGH ENOUGH AS TO ITS HISTORY OR BIOGRAPHY. MY LUNA MOTH WAS FOUND IN MY HOUSE IN FLORIDA, LONG WAY FROM MEXICO/CALIFORNIA HABITAT. I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE THE PICTURES MORE OF A CARTOON MANNER.
I AM KEEPING THE BOOK, BUT AS I SAY EXPECTED MORE. THE QUALITY OF THE BOOK WAS FOUND TO BE NEW AS TOLD.
