I'm not saying anything new when I say that I discovered this band through their breakout hit song "Come With Me Now". I first read about the song before I even heard it because of the hype for the up and coming band of Greek-South African Brothers. I will honestly say, upon my first few listens of the song, I didn't like it. But then one day it came on, and something was different. I found myself chanting along to the lyrics and lip syncing to the very powerful middle part of the song. I had become converted into a fan. So I read about the band and discovered their debut album has been released in the USA finally and I hunted it down after hearing the song "Escape". What I heard within the album were some of the most original sounding and infectious songs to grace my ears in a while. Much of the music is being described as part of the Kwaito genre. Now, after a few listens, here is a track by track review of this soon to be classic album.

1. I'm Only Joking: The album starts out with a unique rocker. The drums are thumping throughout with haunting verses and a very catchy chorus. This song just feels like it would be great to hear live. 9/10
2. Come With Me Now: The song that almost everybody has heard somewhere somehow by now. There is an infectious accordion laced throughout the song with chants of the title leading up to one of the most catchy chorus's in rock music in a long time. But the real gem of the song is during a bridge part during which the vocals get cleaner and more powerful as he sings "Far away, I heard him say...." leading to a great guitar solo. At first I hated the song, and now I can't get enough of it! Candidate for song of the year of 2014 for me. 10/10

Just discovered these guys on a local alternative station. Found myself head bobbing to all their tunes. Mostly upbeat rock, but they add some crazy unique seasoning on top. As you might guess by their name, some songs have fierce driving African conga drum sound, some have a rocking accordion, some are slow and sweet and remind me of Keane. Whatever it is, I love it!

I got this album after hearing "Come With Me Now" during a Jets/Stars hockey game. Come with me now was really good, and I can't say I really knew what to expect when it came to the rest of the album.
I was completely blown away.
Just about every lyric and every note is placed masterfully to create a truly amazing musical experience. From the first track to the last, this release is a fine example of how albums should be made - with true love for your work and a ton of variety. So many musicians today, even the lesser known ones, seem to go by the philosophy that all you need is a catchy tune and nothing more to make a great song. It's so refreshing to see lyrics that have actual meaning to them amidst the wash of shallow, meaningless words that you normally see today.
Personally my favorite song of the album was Escape. I must have listened to it 20 times when I made it to that track.
Overall this album is something I wasn't expecting to find from a newer band - A truly meaningful and great sounding CD that has true love and care poured into every single detail. I can't recommend it enough.

Bought this album a few weeks ago, knowing nothing about the band, just based on the song “Come With Me Now” plus a few really excellent Youtube music videos from the Lunatic album, plus several favorable reviews here at Amazon. I have not been disappointed.

Kongos is a band formed by the 4 Kongos brothers, Johnny, Jesse, Dylan and Danny. Their father John was a successful South African / European singer / songwriter in the 70s and 80s, so musical talent apparently runs in the family. Their debut album Lunatic was released as early as 2012 in various countries, and was officially re-released in January 2014 when the band signed with Epic Records.

All the brothers appear to be talented musicians. A special callout to Jesse on drums – I love the marching band snare drum sound on “I’m Only Joking,” “Take Me Back,” and “It’s A Good Life,” for example, plus solid backup on the rest of the songs. John is the band’s keyboardist, including the accordion. An accordion is a highly unusual rock instrument, but John uses it to excellent effect, making especially impressive contributions to “Come With Me Now” and “Take Me Back.”

John and Jesse appear to be the songwriters in the family. Jesse is credited with 5 songs, John with 4, Dylan with 2, and Danny with one, although it is very clear from the productions that a lot of collaboration goes on among the brothers. Jesse contributed several excellent songs in “I’m Only Joking,” “Hey I Don’t Know” and “It’s A Good Life.” But the top songwriting credit has to go to John for “Come With Me Now” alone. “Take Me Back” is infectious and meticulously well-crafted, and is quickly becoming my favorite song from this album.

Prior to ordering this CD, I listened to it on the Kongos' website, so I knew what I was getting.

The songs are varied, incorporating interesting beats and rhythms into a strong rock outing. The lyrics range from thoughtful to irreverent, and are delivered with powerful vocals. I strongly recommend this.
