Lunatic ending (spoilers)

First off, from Pat's journal entry about "Darth" and how he said he would get all he deserved, I somehow immediately knew it was the banker (even though I couldn't even remember his name). Not sure how but it was a right guess in the end. But here's the thing. The state cop had been to Lunacy more than once. Why did his appearance at the parade cause Ed to freak out and run? That didn't make internally consistent sense to me.

This scene didn't convince me either. It was just plain stupid, like the endings in many others Nora Roberts's books...
