Kiwi Magazine Review:
It took me a while to learn to love graphic novels, but I really appreciate this genre for children. These books are great for reluctant readers and inspiring for budding artists. Although there is a great deal of mimicry and I find alot of similarities in themes (those lunch ladies really are versatile), if the humor and illustrations convince a kid to read this sort of book rather than tune into television or a game, I think this is a victory. This book is silly and fun with some great twists, but, more importantly, might convince a reluctant reader to get lost in its pages.

Captivates dyslexic and reluctant readers,

As a reading tutor I am always looking for high interest books for my dyslexic students. This series of books is perfect--it's funny and has a lot of lively pictures of the cafeteria Lunch Lady saving the day, plus the words used are a good mix of mainly easy and with some challenging ones thrown in too. I have a very smart eleven year old student who can only read at the first or early second grade level and he loves this book. It takes him a long time, but not only can he read almost all of it himself, I have to take the book out of his hands at the end of our session because he is completely engrossed.

Why Did the School Coach Suddenly Disappear?,
By
This review is from: Lunch Lady and the Author Visit Vendetta (Paperback)
After not being very impressed with book 1 and slightly enjoying book 2, I must say book 3 here has left me feeling much better about this series. After a rather curmudgeonly kiddy author visits to sign books, the school's coach disappears. Lunch Lady and the gang do some research and it seems school coaches have been disappearing for a few years back now coinciding with this author's school visits! Lunch Lady to the rescue! Lunch Lady is still a bit over the top with the kitchen gadget spy tools. Here she receives hamburger headphones that let her listen in on conversations going on all around her. The plot is still rather unbelievable. How can a common author have the power to hypnotize men into being his servants for years on end? But I like the repartee between the kids and how they take on the problems they are faced with plus their quick thinking and sensible, realistic solutions. Even though the Lunch Lady series continues to be over the top, I can honestly say I found this one fun, it had its humorous moments and I have finally made a connection with the kids, if not LL. Hopefully book 4 will continue in the same vein.

I first started using this series upon the recommendation of a librarian and I'm glad that I took her advice. I use this series while tutoring elementary students who have problems with reading. The stories are especially helpful with those with short attention spans or who have trouble staying focused. There is sometimes a prejudice against graphic novels as they can be perceived as being "comic books" or simplistic. That is not the case at all for those that I have used. Illustrations and short dialog are just the ticket for my students. First and foremost, though, the Lunch Lady series is witty and entertaining. It should capture the attention of most any young reader, whether they need tutoring in their reading or not.

OK, so our daughter read the 4th book in the series first and was hooked! Let me start off by saying she was NOT a fan of reading before she read this book and seemed to resist reading on her own. Well, she was loving the first book she was reading so much I ordered the rest of the series. Amazon was speedy quick with delivery and she devoured this book in just one day! (Seriously, we had to tell her to stop reading to eat!) She is so proud of her new accomplishment (M & D are too!) and could not wait to get her hands on the next one. So glad I ordered all of them!
(FYI-It does not seem to matter which order they read the books) Big-Big thumbs up!! We have already pre-ordered the next book in the series, coming out end of Dec 2010. I hope Jarrett J. Krosoczka keeps them coming!

Lunch Lady Rocks!,

The Lunch Lady and the Author Visits Vendetta
Sometimes the simple is the most entertaining. Consider the book in question, a relatively simple concept. Hero and sidekick. Replace sidekick with assistant cook, and hero with lunchroom lady. Instead of protecting Gotham, Vendetta is her turf. Mess with her students, and you mess with a dietary demigod! Well, not so much. A well respected author visits the students and to celebrate the fact, the Lunch Lady bakes cookies. He spurns them! Insult of insults. To make it worse, he even refuses to sign a torn book! Gaaaaaah! Is there really more to this self absorbed author? It turns out there is. Lewis Scribson is `investigated' by Dee Terrence and Hector, they discover a secret and release testosterone challenged phys ed teachers. Too much said. Jarrett J Krosoczka is at the top of his game again. Never again will I, as an author, dare to insult kids and train bunnies to kill. Never! Not even once! Look for this at your favorite bookstore. Coming soon to a lunch room near you. Tim Lasiuta
