Our 8 yo daughter is a reluctant reader despite many attempts to get her interested in other books. She asked for this book at her school book fair yesterday and read half the book on her own last night-laughing out loud. She was even reading it on her way down the stairs to breakfast and I had to ask her to put it down to eat!! Her enthusiasm has prompted me now to order other books in the series.

As a reading tutor I am always looking for high interest books for my dyslexic students. This series of books is perfect--it's funny and has a lot of lively pictures of the cafeteria Lunch Lady saving the day, plus the words used are a good mix of mainly easy and with some challenging ones thrown in too. I have a very smart eleven year old student who can only read at the first or early second grade level and he loves this book. It takes him a long time, but not only can he read almost all of it himself, I have to take the book out of his hands at the end of our session because he is completely engrossed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Young Readers Interested in Reading, October 1, 2011

Reading isn't just about school and I have 4 great nieces and nephews that I really hoped would love reading. Two of them don't; the Lunch Lady was part of my plan to entice them to read and...it worked! The fact that it looks like comic strips was an immediate win; the story was fun and interesting. I kept the books at my house and they didn't finish the one they were reading in the first visit. The true test of whether the books were worth it was the kids reaction when they returned for the second visit; they picked up the book they were reading and finished them! No school work; no book report...just fun! I'll be adding more of these books for future visits and also start sneaking in some regular books too. Thanks Lunch Lady...You Rock!

I gave this book, Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown, to my eight year old grand-daughter and she loves it. Though there
are abundant illustrations, she likes the story and is proud to be able to read it herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars HUGE Hit with my 3rd grade grandson!, June 20, 2011

This was a first book of summer surprise when school was out and not only did he read the whole book and LOVE it but then did a web search to find if there were any others in the series! He was so excited to find out there were four others so off we went to the library where he got the other four and devoured them as well! He can not wait for the new one in September to arrive! (Yes I promised to pre-order it!) As far as I'm concerned, any book that can capture the heart of a 3rd grade boy like this is a great book indeed!

I teach middle school special education. My reluctant readers were excited to have another book that they could read. I may have to get the whole series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best One So Far, December 31, 2010
This review is from: Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown (Paperback)
Finally a plot I can believe in. This one belongs to the "Scooby Doo" school of mystery. Summer camp begins with just-for-fun rumours of a Swamp Monster until the new camp councillor is attacked by a green slimy monster. Lunch Lady and the gang think someone real is behind the further Swamp Monster sightings and they go after catching the slimy dude. This volume was a lot of fun. The kids being shuttled off to boys' and girls' cabins find they don't fit in with the other campers very well and drift back to each other, having more fun tracking down criminals than attending arts & crafts classes. A few laugh out loud moments. I really like the kids and while Lunch Lady was more laid-back on her summer vacation I still don't find her character very appealing. Not my favourite series, but book 4 is definitely my favourite in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced, high-energy graphic novel, June 11, 2010
By
This review is from: Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown (Paperback)
Ever since they were young, Dee, Hector and Terrence have dreamed of going to summer camp. Now that they are old enough to enjoy an adventure in the woods, they are beginning to have doubts. Two weeks without video games, computers, or access to any electronics --- along with bullies on the bus who tell stories about camp wars and a blood-thirsty swamp monster --- make them wonder if sleepover camp is such a good idea after all.

Once they arrive there and get off the bus, they feel more confident. They are greeted by the camp's new director and several friendly counselors, as well as two surprising yet familiar faces --- Lunch Lady and Betty --- who are working as cooks at the camp. Later that night, around the open campfire, their fears return after one of the counselors warns them about the terrible swamp monster that "lives at the bottom of the pond...with legs the size of tree trunks and fangs as sharp as knives." The director assures the campers that the swamp monster is just a myth, but rumors run rampant after one of the new and popular counselors is attacked.

Following the attack, the kids' camp experience goes from lame to lamer. The new director places waterfront activities off-limits, the camp dance is called off, and cabin wars are cancelled. With most of the fun activities out of the picture, boredom sets in quickly.

Late one night, for some excitement, Dee, Hector and Terrence sneak out of their cabins and meet up for a midnight snack. Their ice cream raid gets interrupted by an unwelcome visitor who frightens them and destroys the mess hall. But nobody messes with the Lunch Lady's kitchen! Lunch Lady is more than grilled cheese and ice cream sandwiches, and vows to get to the bottom of the swamp monster. While the kids follow a lead on a suspicious character, Lunch Lady suits up and takes off in another direction to expose the person trying to frighten campers and destroy summer camp.

LUNCH LADY AND THE SUMMER CAMP SHAKEDOWN is a fast-paced, high-energy graphic novel. Written and illustrated by award-winning author and illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka, the story and illustrations make the reading experience a delight. While the story is light-hearted, the novel touches on some serious and timely issues, including lying, bullying and jealousy. Krosoczka weaves these topics into the storyline in a sure-handed, but not preachy, way.

Just like summer camp, the latest Lunch Lady book is a teeny bit scary but lots of fun --- and a memorable experience that middle-grade readers, especially reluctant ones, will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lunch Lady is dynamite and don't mess with dynamite, May 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown (Paperback)
Just got my copy of Lunch Lady and the Summer camp shakedown and immediately tore through it. Comic books are meant to transport you to this other world where the regular rules don't apply and Jarrett Krosoczka is quickly becoming a master of the genre. In the fourth installment of the series, Lunch lady and her regular band of students trade in the schoolhouse for the summer camp. There is a hilarious moment when all of the summer camp counselors are introduced and it is explained how they are all into each other. Now I used to work at a summer camp and let me tell you Krosoczka hit it right on the head. I mean I feel like I personally know some of the counselors in this book. The ending is great as well with a slight head nod to classic Scooby Doo stories. I highly recommend this book to people of all ages, from the 10 year old on his or her way to summer camp for the first time to the old time counselor with a sore back from too many piggy back rides.

Oh and the bully is hilarious and probably in need of a spinoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never been to camp?, July 6, 2010
This review is from: Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown (Paperback)
Many kids will never get the chance to go to camp for real so why not live vicariously through LL and the Summer Camp Shakedown. No reader will need encouragement to read this newest graphic book whether or not they have read the other 3 in the series. Just a fun adventure with all the elements of a good summer read--perfect for the readers edging into chapter books. Look for one of the Lunch Ladies in her hair rollers--LOL!
